Do Now Get into your small groups from yesterday – your work is in the folder on the desk. You will have five minutes to work within your groups to identify what you think is the most important information for your peers to know. Keep your facts bite- sized…

Group Stations Around the room is chart paper related to your categories. When I say go, your group will have five minutes to write down your facts. Please leave enough room for the other group to write their facts. Everyone needs to write something. When I say SWITCH, go to the next chart paper. After your second category, please STOP and wait.

Carousel When I say go, you will then go to the chart paper of the topics you did not research. Please take down all the notes! When you are finished taking notes, please sit down quietly in your seat and write a short paragraph (3-4 sentences) about the Scottsboro boys reading. Please have your homework out from last night as a reference.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD BOOKS!

Homework Read the first PARAGRAPH of Chapter 1 and come tomorrow with questions that you have.

9/18/2014

Do Now 9/18/2014 Answer the following questions in 1-2 complete sentences: Why is it important to ask questions as we read texts? What happens if we don’t take notes and ask questions?

Agenda Do now Share out Creating Questions Practice Share out Point of View TKAM Chapter 1

CREATING QUESTIONS

Creating questions… this applies to AT HOME READING It’s important to ask questions as we read so that we are constantly engaging in the text and making predictions. Follow these rules: 1. Ask as many questions as you can 2. Do not stop to discuss, judge, or answer any of the questions 3. Write down every question exactly as you think it 4. Change any statements into questions Don’t try to be perfect – just write down questions!

For example… Who is this girl? What is her name? How old is she? Why does she have overalls on? Are they shorts or pants? Why does she have a boyish haircut? Is she in a movie or a TV show? What is she looking at? Where does she live? What is her family like?

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD BOOKS!

PRACTICE!

Now you… Read the FIRST TWO PARAGRAPHS of To Kill a Mockingbird and create your own questions for the text. Write all the answers in your notebook. You will have 6 minutes. Remember the rules: 1. Ask as many questions as you can 2. Do not stop to discuss, judge, or answer any of the questions 3. Write down every question exactly as you thought it 4. Change any statements into questions

Period 2 Questions We Came Up With: How to Jem get his arm broken? Why would prior events leading to the breaking of Jem’s elbow? Who are the Ewells? What football team does Dill play for? Why did they name him Jem? Are there still racial issues in this book? Was he able to play football again? What high school does he go to? How old is the narrator? Why is this person (she/he) narrating? Cause effect being made? How old is the narrator? Why does it take years to talk about what happened?

Period 3 Questions We Came Up With: What caused Jem’s injury? Why bother telling us one arm is shorter than the other? Who is the narrator? Why be self conscious about the injury? What does assuaged mean? Who is Dill? Why is football so important? Is Jem righty or lefty? Four years my senior? Who or what is Boo Radley? How are the narrator/Dilly/Jem related? Why bother talking about the brother? Why named Jem? How old is NOW? How did he break his arm? What is Boo Radley coming out of? Who or what are the Ewells? Why focus on the past so much? What year is this? Where are they? What does everything look like? What year?

Why is this being told as A REFLECTION? Narrator was nine when the event happened The narrator might be UNRELIABLE.

Period 4 Questions We Came Up With: How did Jem break his arm? Who is Dill? How tall is Jem? Why is Jem’s left arm shorter than his left? Is Jem good at football? Who is Boo Radley? Why is our narrator blaming the Ewells? Who is the narrator? How long for Jem’s arm to heal? What are these events? What does Jem stand for? Who are the Ewells? What position does Jem play? Why is the broken arm relevant? Where is Boo Radley coming out of? Who is Andrew Jackson Why does Jem want to play football? Who tackled him? What is Jem’s last name? What does Dill came to us mean? What does Jem only want to pass and punt? What happens during the summer? Four years my senior?

WHY IS THIS BEING TOLD AS A REFLECTION? Narrator was 9 years old at the time of the accident This narrator may not be RELIABLE.

Period 5 Questions We Came Up With: How did Jem break his elbow? WHO IS THE NARRATOR?? What does assuaged mean? Who is Dill? What does seldom mean? Who is Boo Radley? Did Jem ever play football again? Who are the Ewells? What year did this take place? What does “four years my senior” mean? Was anyone else involved in the accident? What is a punt? How old is Jem? HOW OLD IS JEM NOW

Jem = 13 when the accident happened Narrator = 9 when the accident happened Years had gone by = as a REFLECTION/LOOK BACK.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Chapter 1

Homework Finish reading chapter 1 and come up with THREE questions of your own related to the text.

9/19/2014

Do Now – This is being collected!! Please answer this question in 3-5 complete sentences. What are the implications of Atticus and his younger brother turning to professions outside of farming? What might this say about them and how they see and experience the world?

Agenda Do now Share out Chapter 1 Discussion Boo Radley Narrative Homework

Chapter 1 Discussion – Questions We had?

BOO RADLEY NARRATIVE

Because the narrative is from Scout’s perspective, we don’t know how the other characters feel. A lot of time is spent in Chapter 1 on the “cult” of Boo Radley, but we never actually meet him. Directions: Pick any of the situations described in Chapter 1 (his teen years, the night of the arrests, a day in the life of his inside the house, the night of the scissors, etc.) and write a one page narrative from Boo Radley’s perspective. You should include dialogue that will help us get a better sense of who you think this character is based on what we know so far. If you feel the creative energy flowing, write something longer than two pages and I will give you extra credit. You can type this or hand-write it. This is your opportunity to be creative! Your account should Be one page in length show an understanding of Boo’s character through your use of description and dialogue Provide a vivid, realistic depiction of a conversation between Boo and another character (his mom, his dad, his friends, etc.) conclude in a sensible, realistic way use spelling and grammar appropriate to the context of the story.

Homework Finish the Boo Radley narrative and reading chapter 2. Come prepared with 4 questions (1 every two pages!)
