LOOKING AT ASSESSMENTS DOK – PART 2

GOALS FOR TODAY Review Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels Identify assessment questions of various DOK levels Understand what DOK levels look like in your subject-area Apply the concept of DOK to your own assessment

4 Level 1: Recall Focus is on specific facts, definitions, details, or using routine procedures Can be ‘difficult’ without requiring ‘deep’ content knowledge “You know it or you don’t” Level 2: Skill/Concept Focus is on applying skills and concepts, relationships (compare, cause-effect) Making decisions Interpreting Level 3: Strategic Reasoning Focus is on reasoning Complex and abstract thinking is required Justification May need to experiment to find the solution Level 4: Extended Reasoning Requires complex reasoning, planning, and thinking Relate concepts among other content areas or within that content area Make real-world applications in new situations

WHAT DOK LEVEL IS IT? Which of these best summarizes what the passage is about? A.How a young man started a successful business after coming to America B.How clothing styles were affected by the work of the gold miners C.Why immigrants came to America to improve their lives

WHAT DOK LEVEL IS IT? Students are given the scenario of acid rain potentially causing problems in a specific farming community. Students are to define and describe the problems with supporting data. There should be a proposal of alternative solutions to the problem, a selection of one solution, and an explanation of why it would be the best alternative. The selected solution must include a plan for implementation

WHAT DOK LEVEL IS IT? Julie wants to fence in an area of her yard for her dog. After paying for the materials to build her doghouse, she can afford to buy only 36 feet of fencing. She is considering various different shapes for the enclosed area. However, she wants all of her shapes to have 4 sides that are whole number lengths and contain 4 right angles. All 4 sides are to have fencing. What is the largest area that Julie can enclose with 36 feet of fencing? Justify your answer by showing work that would convince Julie that your area is the largest.

APPLYING TO YOUR WORK Review your assessment What DOK level would you assign to each question? How many of each do you have? How many of each seem appropriate? How can you make it more varied?

WHAT DOK IS IT? DOK 1 – Recall Is it “naked” content? Does it cue a standard algorithm/procedure? DOK 2 – Skill/Concept Does it require multiple mental/cognitive steps? Is a decision made? Does it require applying a skill to a situation? DOK 3 – Strategic Reasoning Does it require justification, rationale, proof, explanation or experimentation AND Is it strategic? DOK 4 – Extended Reasoning Is it at least a level 3 AND Does it require connections (within or across content)?

CROSS-CONTENT Find someone from another content-area Share what you saw in your assessment & some of your various leveled questions

HOW DO YOU BUMP IT UP? From DOK 1 to DOK 2…have students do something with the information Compare/contrast Categorize Summarize Explain how or why From DOK 2 to DOK 3…have student think strategically to plan and justify their response with evidence From DOK 3 to DOK 4…extend the reasoning across concepts, time or texts; create something of their own
