SAB Report 9 SAB Initiatives (1 of 3) u Challenge: Declining relevance of de jure standardization in IT profession, contrasted with an increasing need for professional norms. u Strategy: Move to a broader view of “standardization” to encompass a variety of processes and products - some very light-weight. u 2003 Accomplishments: u CS Bylaws changed to give SAB responsibility for policies for consensus agreements u Extensive discussion in SAB u 2004 Plans: u Separate meetings of SAB AdCom and whole committee – “old” SAB versus “new” SAB u Encourage standards sponsors to form relationships with other technical resources in CS, e.g. SESC with TCSE u More connections between JTC1 Tech Watch and CS tech activities u Trials of light-weight agreement workshops

Provide sponsor assistance. u 2003 Accomplishments: u Simplified CS Bylaws and Procedures for SAB u Drafts of items listed below u 2004 Plans: u Drastically smaller P&P. u Embrace IEEE-SA model sponsor P&P. u Clarify sponsor relationship to SAB, i.e. step aside from some administrative functions.
SAB Report 11 SAB Initiatives (3 of 3) u Challenge: Broadening international impact of CS IT standardization efforts. u Strategy: Exploit current international liaison for SWE standardization and extend it to other IT areas. u 2003 Accomplishments: u ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7 approval of IEEE-CS “Vision of Outcomes” and Coordination Procedure u One standard fast-tracked – others on the way – a dozen harmonization efforts underway u SC7 decides to adopt SWEBOK Guide as an ISO/IEC Technical Report u JTC1 Technology Watch formed – CS invited to participate u IEEE invited to apply for Category A liaison to JTC1 (mixed blessing!) u 2004 Plans (funds needed): u Participate in JTC1 Tech Watch and study groups u Offer CSDP “task analysis” for international standardization u Expand current beachheads u Exploit opportunities in software-intensive systems engineering u Request: Assign responsibility for IFIP representation to SAB
