MISSION To improve the competitiveness of South African industry by supporting research and technology development activities and enhancing the quality and quantity of appropriately skilled people.

OBJECTIVES People with appropriate skills for industry; Interaction among researchers and technology managers; Increased investment in research; Collaborative research and development projects.

PRIORITIES Black and female students; SMME involvement; BEE involvement; Multi-firm projects, strongly encouraging SMME participation.

BENEFITS TO INDUSTRY Developing new innovative products and services. Technology and expertise available to a company through technology transfer. Funding the education of the next generation of technical leadership. Facilitating contacts and foster collaboration between researchers, technology managers and sub-contractors in Industry and academia. Improve competitiveness in the SA economy. Successful development of projects can lead to the creation of new jobs in different fields.

THRIP APPLICATIONS Industry partner(s) and HEI or SETI researchers agree on project. HEI or SETI researcher submits application to THRIP with industry endorsement. Applicant cannot be the student on the project. Industry involvement: endorsing application and commenting on progress online. Peer-review and recommendation for funding. Level of funding is dependent on industry partner(s) and number of students participating.

THRIP APPLICATIONS cont. Online Student nomination process and sign Condition of Grant before Allocation letter will be sent. Proof of payment from industry required for release of funds by the NRF. THRIP funds may not be carried over to the next financial year. Maximum awarded amount R8 million per grantholder per year.

THRIP supports technology transfer by bringing together academics and industry.

TIPTOP Incentive mechanism to encourage industry employees to further their studies while continuing their employment. Encourages academia to obtain industry experience while still being involved in their research activities. The transfer of knowledge is possible through the physical relocation of participants between the organisations involved in the projects.

STUDENT AMOUNT The THRIP qualifying amount is dependent on industry contribution as well as number of students involved at least 20% of their time in the project. R qualifying amount for SA Students. R qualifying amount for African Students.
