Presentation transcript:

Why do we do advisory? A high school teacher, trainer, and instructional coach, Chase Mielke was a 2014 Michigan Teacher of the Year nominee. In this video, “What Students Really Need to Hear”, he sums up what we as teachers feel about our students. Advisory is our chance to connect with you as people, not just students.

ADVISORY PURPOSE The Kent School District advisory program supports student academic achievement, social development, and success beyond high school. Required Components and Essential Elements Academic Achievement School Success Skills Academic Review Social Development Community Building Character Development Success Beyond High School Culminating Project Monitoring and Support Post High School Planning

REQUIRED COMPONENTS OF THE CULMINATING PROJECT Academic Components High School and Beyond Plan (4 year plan and 13 th year plan) Research paper (11 th grade) Oral Presentation (12 th grade) Awards, Recognitions, Accomplishments Career Components Interest Inventory Career Pathway/ Exploration Community Service (16 hours) Job Application Cover Letter Resume Letter of Recommendation (1 from non-teacher) Job Shadow (1 day experience)

GRADE LEVEL PROJECTS Junior Year:  Job Shadow Presentation Senior Year:  Senior Oral Presentation  Culminating Project

CAREER EXPLORATION RESEARCH PROJECT Objective: Identify a career that interests you. Find a person who works in this job or in a closely related job. Set-up a job shadow with this person. Document your experience and findings. Present the results of your job shadow to the rest of your advisory. Your Task: For this year-long project you will be answering the questions: What does it really take to do a particular job? After brainstorming independently and as a class you will determine a job that you would like to know more about. Research companies or professionals who are working in this job. Contact the company or professional and formally request to set- up a job shadow. Complete your job shadow and document the experience. Reflect on your experience and compare it to your expectations. Present your experience to the rest of your advisory in a seven minute presentation.

SOME QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE When will the project be due? You will present your project in semester two. The deadline is TBD. When will we work on the project? We will work on the project on a regular basis during advisory. Is this a graduation requirement? Yes, and you have to meet standard on your project. If my project doesn’t meet standard, what happens? You keep trying until it does meet standard. Am I still responsible for the other parts of the Culminating Project that aren’t part of the junior or senior projects. Yes. I am a transfer student who wasn’t here during freshman or sophomore year, do I still have to do those parts of Culminating Project? No, they will be waived.

WHAT CAREER INTERESTS YOU? Think quietly to yourself, then prepare to share your answers with a partner.  What will your next step after high school be?  What sort of career pathway interests you most? (food, construction, communications, business, education, finance, government, health science, tourism, human services, technology, public safety, manufacturing, marketing, engineering, or transportation)  What is a job that interests you in this career pathway?
