Case Studies: Three Ways of Purchasing Renewable Energy University of Pennsylvania University of Pennsylvania –Penn used savings from conservation efforts to buy 20,000,000 kWh of Wind Energy in In 2003, Penn doubled its wind power purchase to 40,000,000 kWh. The new contract will last until 2014 and comprises more than 10% of Penn's electricity. Duke University Duke University –University matches student, faculty, and staff purchases of renewable energy up to $25,000. Within a week of launching the program, more than 300 students signed up to purchase renewable energy. Connecticut College Connecticut College –In 2000, 90% of students at Connecticut college voted in favor of instituting a mandatory $25 dollar fee to purchase 20% renewable energy for their school. The college now buys 44% renewable energy.
