1. How would you describe the narrator as a character? What word or words describe him well? Why? From Star Power! The narrator of this story is young, shy, and anxious. Almost as if he has a type of social anxiety. The character is shown as withdrawn from his family, spending a great amount of time in the back room of his home where the previous tenant had died. Within the story we are told that the narrator finds isolation in the upper floor of his home. He is shown falling in love, or at least infatuation with a friend’s sister. “Araby”

The boy thought the girl was great but in all reality, she is not as great as he thinks and neither is the bazaar. She has struggled with the death of her mother and older brother, and has to care for her father to keep the household together. She also has issues with her boyfriend, and at the end makes the decision to not join him on the ship. However, throughout most of the story she is eager to get away. “Eveline”

She seems so in love and interested in Frank, and she also has a dislike for her father. But then, she is worried that her father would miss her if she left with Frank. She is torn between the idea of loving her father, even if she does not like him, and her love of Frank. She does not want to hurt either one, but she will hurt someone no matter what decision she makes. “Eveline”

She is naïve because she expects to just leave with this man and live happily ever after. From The Wolf Pack Ever since Eveline’s mother died, Eveline is the person who is in charge of the household. She is the motherly figure for her siblings and gets groceries and takes care of the house. She fell in love with a sailor quickly, only after a few weeks, and she was thinking of running away with him that quickly. She decided to stay though because she could not leave her family and her father was being nice the previous days. “Eveline”

She set her white face to him, passive, like a helpless animal. Her eyes gave him no sign of love or farewell or recognition.” These sentences are the last few of the short story. Eveline and Frank are at the dock and Frank is on the boat calling for Eveline. This is when Eveline finally makes her decision between staying with her family or going with Frank, which was the conflict of the story. She decides to stay at home with her family, and shows “no sign of love or farewell or recognition” to her boyfriend as he leaves on the boat. “Eveline”
