9 Week Assessment Review Pick up a sheet from the front table and get out your reviews please Pick up a sheet from the front table and get out your reviews please Thursday 10/23/14

Plate Prep You will work in pairs. One person from each pair will WALK to the lab area & get one plate and bring it back to their table. When you finish answering the question, the other partner will WALK to the lab, toss their plate into the lab, and get a different plate to take back to their table. You will alternate who WALKS to the lab each time. When you & your partner have answered all of the questions, come to me for the bonus question. The first pair with all of the correct answers and bonus answer wins a bathroom pass.

C – Level 2 H – Work with your partner. A – Answer review questions. M – WALKING back & forth to the lab to get a plate. P – Each pair will alternate who goes to the lab. S uccess – Reviewing the important concepts for our 9-week exam

Why is heating materials in a closed test tube unsafe? Expands & will burst or explode

What is the independent variable? The one being tested. The one I change.

What is the dependent variable? The one being measured. The one that responds to the IV being changed.

What are the levels of organization from atom to organism? Atom molecule cell tissue organ organ system organism

What Biological Macromolecule contains Nitrogen? Proteins Nucleic Acids

What are complex carbohydrates broken down into during digestions (what is the monomer)? Monosaccharides

10 What are proteins made of? amino acids

11 What type of macromolecule are enzymes? Picky proteins

12 What three things affect how quickly enzymes (the Picky Protein) will break down substrates? pHTemperatureConcentration

13 How does temperature affect an enzyme? Changes the shape & causes it to slow down or not work

What are some functions of enzymes? Speed up, break down, digest

15 How can you tell the difference between a prokaryotic & eukaryotic cell? nucleus

16 What 4 structures do all prokaryotic cells have? DNARibosomes Cell membrane Cytoplasm

17 What are the characteristics of a eukaryotic cell? Unicellular or multicellular Have a nucleus Cell membrane, DNA, ribosomes, cytoplasm Have membrane-bound organelles Reproduce by mitosis or meiosis

18 What is the purpose of the cell membrane? Maintain homeostasis by regulating what goes in & out of the cell

What is the purpose of a semipermeable membrane? Allow certain molecules to pass through and not allow others.

What is the difference between diffusion and osmosis? Diffusion involves the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. Osmosis is the movement of WATER from high to low

In a semipermeable membrane, what determines whether or not a molecule can pass through the membrane? Size, shape & polarity

B. Which solution would cause the cell to swell? A B C

Facilitated diffusion What is the movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration using a transport protein?

Facilitated diffusion What type of transport is shown below?

What process occurs in the chloroplast? What occurs in the mitochondria? Photosynthesis (plants) Photosynthesis (plants) Cell respiration (plants & animals) Cell respiration (plants & animals)

Fill in the blanks with the correct words… Photosynthesis converts _________ energy into _________ energy. Light and food

What reacts with the energy from sunlight to produce sugar or oxygen during photosynthesis? H2O

Transfer Energy What is the purpose of ATP in photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

To release stored energy (aka ATP) What is the purpose of cellular respiration?

What does the mitochondria provide to help skin cells heal a wound? Energy (ATP)

How active the cells are What determines the number of mitochondria that a cell will have?

oxygen What gas is produced as a product of photosynthesis?

What is made by one, is used by the other What is the difference between photosynthesis & cellular respiration? (why are they opposites)

Which of the following is the equation for photosynthesis? A. CO 2 + H 2 O+ light C 6 H 12 O 6 +O 2 B. C 6 H 12 O 6 +O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O+ ATP CO 2 + H 2 O+ light C 6 H 12 O 6 +O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O+ light C 6 H 12 O 6 +O 2
