 The purpose of the “GO” grants program is to support high impact ideas that lend themselves to short-tem funding, and may lay the foundation for new fields of investigation.  The “GO” grants program will support large-scale research projects that accelerate critical breakthroughs, early and applied research on cutting-edge technologies, and new approaches to improve the synergy and interactions among multi and interdisciplinary research teams.  The initiative seeks novel approaches in areas that address specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation, or research methods that would benefit from an influx of funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways.  Applicants may propose to address either a specific research question or propose the creation of a unique infrastructure/resource designed to accelerate scientific progress in the future.  This program is a trans-NIH effort supported by Recovery Act funds. For those projects that span the missions of Institutes, Centers and Offices (ICs), support may come from Recovery Act funds allocated to the Common Fund.  Only applications with budgets greater than $500,000 total costs per year for a project period of two years are expected to be considered. Additional Funds for Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) “a rigorous evaluation of the impact of different options that are available for treating a given medical condition for a particular set of patients. Such a study may compare similar treatments, such as competing drugs, or it may analyze very different approaches, such as surgery and drug therapy.” Such research may include the development and use of clinical registries, clinical data networks, and other forms of electronic health data that can be used to generate or obtain outcomes data as they apply to CER.
