© 2012 EnMasse Industrial Design LLC Case Study: 3G/4G Wireless UpLink Solution for Broadcasting

Challenge: Our client, a startup developing a 3G/4G Wireless UpLink Solution for Broadcasting came to EnMasse Design to develop their next generation product. Goals: * Provide a new design language for their product line. * Provide Mechanical Design and Engineering for a small footprint computer. * Develop a Thermal strategy for the product allowing cooling in a custom backpack. * Light weight and smaller than current generation. * Extremely tight deadline to make tradeshow schedule. Result: * High quality look and feel. * High performance thermal strategy. * Compact design fits in a smaller backpack * Light weight for easy portability

Brief Process: EnMasse Design worked with a local Thermal Engineering firm to provide a comprehensive airflow and cooling strategy for the small form factor product. Various options were considered with the ultimate solution being a forced air, heat pipe and radiator hybrid solution. Thermal simulations provided a level of confidence in the design given the extremely short development cycle. Thermal requirements such as open area and airflow paths were passed along to allow the mechanical and Industrial Design efforts to proceed.

Brief Process: Concurrently the product Industrial Design was being developed to accommodate the thermal requirements such as open area and airflow paths. Internal and external design features were developed including fan mounts, heatsink mounting, circuit board mounting, connectors, wire paths and assembly process. Detailed part and assembly files were created in Solidworks. Rapid prototypes were produced for initial testing. Machined prototypes were produced locally to test fit and to validate the thermal simulations.

3G/4G Wireless UpLink Solution for Broadcasting Mechanical, Thermal Engineering and Industrial Design. Provided concept through pilot production of this portable telecom product – Final design language includes an anodized aluminum case with post machined highlights providing a high quality appearance.
