Talking about physical training Prof. Sergio Font Milian, PhD.

Today’s Contents Describing physical training Describing an athlete’s training routine

Some questions What do you do to warm up? How often do you do physical training? Do you ever get relaxation exercises? How do you work on your flexibility? How do you manage to keep fit?

Clive: I know you have the best basketball team in the whole country. They must train very hard to keep such a high level. Thomas: Yes, all of our sportsmen must work very hard to remain in our training center, but we are actually more demanding with our basketball team. That’s probably why they have reached such a high standard of performance.

Clive:Do they have to meet certain requirements to be accepted here? Thomas: Certainly. Basketball players have to take physical tests that measure their strength, speed, endurance and other parameters. You know basketball is a tough sport. Besides that, they must be taller than six feet. Clive:I understand. Basketball players must be very tall.

Talking about height Who is the tallest basketball player today? Sun Mingming How tall is he? 2.36 meters tall 7 feet 9 inches tall

Using MUST to talk about sports Obligation You must train very hard before the competition. You must follow your coach’s instructions during the game. You must keep yourself focused.

Logical deduction It must be very difficult to stop Sun Mingming from dunking a ball. She must have trained very hard to achieve such a high level of performance. The judges gave her the maximum score. She must have done a perfect job. You must be proud of your team. They have won three championships in a row.

Thomas: They have to go through very long training sessions every day. They must get up early and follow their training programs to the letter. This is the only way they can perform at their best both physically and technically. Clive:Are there any other requirements? Thomas:Yes, if they’re students, they must pass all of their exams at school. You can’t be a member of any of our teams if you don’t get good results at school.

Using conditionals to talk about sports How to express a condition and the results of its fulfillment If + condition, + result. Result + if + condition.

If + condition, + result If you train very hard, you’ll be able to beat all your opponents. Result + if + condition You`ll be able to beat all your opponents if you train very hard.

More examples If your team has good pitchers, you will probably be able to win the tournament. If the Ethiopian manages to keep close behind the Kenyans in the first seven laps round the track, he may be able to overtake them in the final sprint.

If the wind is not too strong this afternoon, the shotgun shooters will be able to hit most of the clay targets. If the Cuban blockers perform at their best, they will be able to stop the Brazilian powerful spikers. If the judges are fair, they will give the Chinese divers a very high score for this dive.

What may happen if you don’t warm up enough? – You may get an injury. – You will probably pull a muscle. – Your muscles will probably hurt. – Your body will not be ready to perform at its best.

Some typical warm-up exercises Rope jumping She jumps the rope to get warmed up.

Situps She does four series of situps at the start of her training sessions every morning to tune up her abdomen.

pushups Doing pushups helps her build her arm muscles.

Bending down Bending down helps your body keep flexible and fit.

Chinups He does chinups to make his arms stronger.

Complete by adding a suitable result to these conditions. If you bend down… If you do pushups… If you do situps… If you jump the rope… If you do chinups…

Use must to complete the following sentences. If you want your body to be flexible… If you want your arms to get stronger… If you want your abdomen to tune up… If you want your waist to be flexible… If you want a good basketball team…
