 Della has only 1.87 cents to buy Jim a present for Christmas. Poor Della flopped down on the shabby couch and howled because she didn’t have enough money to buy a present for Jim.

 She was only paid $30 a week in which went to bills and food. Della thought very hard in how to get money to buy a present for Jim.

 Della went to the mirror and brushed out her hair and got an idea. There were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs one was Jim’s gold watch that had belonged to his father and grandfather, The other one was Della’s hair. Della put her hair back up and grabbed her coat and walked out the door.

 Della saw a sign that read: ‘Mme Sofronie. Hair styles of all kinds. When she caught the courage she ran up the stairs to see ‘ Mme Sofronie. Della asked her will you buy my hair. Madame said “take off your hat and lets have a look”. Della’s hair fell Madame said “ $20 for your hair “. Della said “ hurry up cut it before I change my mind “.

 Della ran down the stairs out to the streets in searching the shops for a present for Jim. After many shops Della found the perfect present for Jim, a platinum fob chain for his watch. Della went home and put the chops on the stove. Della went to the mirror to look at her hair and was praying that Jim would still think she was pretty.

 Jim walked through the door and his jaw dropped. He saw Della’s short hair. Della said “ Jim honey don’t give me that look, I cut my hair to get you a present for Christmas”. Then Della said “ say something Jim anything”. Jim said “ you cut your hair “.
