The Long-term Effects of Divorce: Later in Life Sarah Loring & Amy Greenslade

Our Hypothesis: There will be a higher incidence of unhealthy attachment in young adults whose parents are divorced. The highest incidence of unhealthy attachment will be in females from divorced homes.

Development of Our Hypothesis Personal Experience Related Studies

Related Research Aro & Palosaari (1991) - found a connection between delinquency and parental divorce Drill (1985) assessed the relationship between the perceived loss of one parent, and the happiness of the child.

Related Research cont… Gately (1991) - believed that there are positive outcomes for children from divorced families. Kalter (1987) believed that parental divorce could lead to problems in future sexual relationships, whereas Barone (1993) stated that there was no statistical evidence that divorced parents play any part in future relationship satisfaction

Method Participants: - 40 Acadia students - 20 males (10 from divorced homes) & 20 females (10 from divorced homes) - age: Materials: - A self-report questionnaire to measure level of healthy attachment - consent and debriefing forms

Method Procedure: - A convenient sample gathered from the library - Distribution of consent form and questionnaires - Debriefing - Score the questionnaires, and analyze the results with a 2x2 ANOVA

Results

Discussion We did not find at the  =.05 level that people from divorced homes are more unhealthily attached than those from married homes, nor did we find that women are more unhealthily attached than men.

Suggestions Larger Sample size A longitudinal study, not relying solely on self-report Longer, more complex questionnaire
