The Truth Behind Animals Used as Resources By: Amanda Adamakis Craven Early College

Starting Quotation…  “Imagine being hit on the head and finding yourself dazed but still fully conscious. A chain is attached to one of your legs and you're hoisted upside down onto an assembly line. As you lash out in terror, gigantic clippers are used to snip off the lower parts of your arms and legs. Completely helpless, you feel workers cutting into your thighs, belly, and sides as they strip your skin from your legs to your neck. Even with the skin peeled back all the way up to your head, you are conscious enough to struggle” (Speak Out for Species).

Topic  My graduation project focuses on the ways that animals are being used as resources for human benefits and the cruelties that sometime go on.

Interests  Family  Vegetarian  “Just like the dogs and cats we welcome into our homes, farmed animals — pigs, chickens, cows, turkeys, and others — have their own personalities, inquisitive natures, likes and dislikes, and most importantly, the ability to feel pain and fear, suffer from boredom and frustration, and experience happiness,” (Speak Out For Species).

Paper  Driving Question: What are the ways animals are used as resources and what types of animal cruelty are involved?  Thesis Statement: Animal cruelty is often involved when animals are used for human resources.

Paper Continued Key Facts:  Experiments…  Food…  Clothing…  Entertainment…

Experiment Example  The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) is the only federal law to require basic standards of care, housing, and treatment of laboratory animals. However, the AWA excludes birds, mice, and rats bred for use in research, who represent approximately 95 percent of animals used in experiments.

Food Example  The female chicks become egg-laying hens like their mothers and are separated from them immediately after birth. The male chicks, however, are a breed that is of no use to the industry, so they are suffocated, crushed or ground up alive as soon as they are hatched.

Clothing Example  Since animals raised for fur are most valued because of their coat, they are typically killed by anal/vaginal electrocution or by having their neck broken.

Entertainment Example  “Except for a few situations, most animals are taken out of their natural environment to perform acts not typically in their behavioral repertoire.” - Jennifer Dragotta from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty

Successes and Challenges Successes:  Presentation  Writing research paper  Majority of the product Challenges:  Managing my time  Revising research paper

Conclusions  Throughout my research I learned that there are various ways to help animals being mistreated for resources and there are various benefits in doing so.

Final Process Reflection  The NC graduation project really showed me the importance of balancing my time.  Apart from that, writing the research paper was good practice for my future college classes.
