IDDM -YOGA -CAMP INTEGERATED RESIDENTIAL YOGA THERAPY CAMP FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITH DIABETES MELLITUS

IDDM - YOGA -CAMP INTRODUCTION structural residential, health education, medical recreation camps have been documented world wide to improve the overall wellbeing for children and youth with diabetes.Besides short term & long term improvements in metabolic control,such dedicated efforts improve the self confidence..

… and motivation of the children afflicted by a chronic debilitating malady.The potential additional benefits of integrated yoga therapy has not been studied.

IDDM -YOGA -CAMP AIMS To evaluate the short and long term medical psychological and overall health benefits of residential integrated yoga therapy in children and youth with diabetes

IDDM -YOGA -CAMP Subjects IDDM n = 20 m = 9 f = 11 Socio economic status -Lower, middle and upper classes Age range = 4-24 years Duration = 2 weeks

IDDM -YOGA -CAMP Assessments Baseline, 3 months,12 months fasting sugars HbA1c Autonomic parameters ( Heart rate variability) Quality of life

IDDM -YOGA -CAMP Intervention Group A = Relaxing yoga (Experimental) Group B = Dynamic yoga (control)

IDDM -YOGA -CAMP Results Preliminary The ongoing study is currently too small to yield statistically significant results.

IDDM -YOGA -CAMP Qualitative observations A) All children reported improvements in their confidence and overall wellbeing. B) The independently monitoring diabetes health care team confirms these observation,and also reports increase compliance to the medical regimen

IDDM -YOGA -CAMP Conclusions Integrated approach of yoga therapy has potential to additionally to improve and enrich the short and long term metabolic control and quality of life of children & youth with diabetes. However this needs better and much stronger scientific documentation.
