Medical Answers Q: How does a person inherit Klinefelter’s Syndrome? Is it dominant recessive, sex-linked, too many/ too few chromosomes, or a mutation? A: Klinefelter’s Syndrome is a disorder that only affects males. This rarely occurs, but when it does, it happens when a parent gives an extra “x” chromosome. Q: What are the possible genotypes of the parents? If the disease is a chromosomal abnormality, describe the abnormality. A: One parent, the female, give two x chromosomes, while the male gives an x and a y chromosome. However during Klinefelter’s syndrome, the offspring obtains an extra x chromosome. Q: How prevalent is the disease in the population? What are the chances of a person with this disease passing the disease to their offspring ? A: The chances of getting this disorder, is very rare. The chances are between 1 in 500 and 1 in 1000 Q: How is the disease diagnosed? A: The disease is usually diagnosed during the female’s pregnancy, or during the males puberty session “XXY”

Medical Answers continued … Q: What are physical symptoms of the disease? A: Extra breast, little facial and body, less muscular body, and infertilely Q: What is the life expectancy of someone with the disease? A: A male with this disease could live as long as a regular person, just with some obstacles during life. Q: How can this disease be treated? A: A way this disease could be treated, is to take hormone replacement therapy, synthetic testerone.

Personal Answers Q: What is everyday life like? A: A person having to deal with this disorder, is sometimes very difficult. Since they don’t have a very muscular body, they have to exercise more often, they also have to go to therapy. Q: What limitations does the person have? A: The person with the disease is not able to produce a sperm, they are least likely to have a child. Q: What are some organizations that can help a family cope with a child’s disorder? A: There are many organizations to help a family cope with the child’s disorder, like Medscape.com, it shows Klinefelter’s Syndrome treatment and management. Another website is nichd.nih.gov.Medscape.comnichd.nih.gov Q: How possible is it that cure will be found? A: I believe that a cure will not be found, but some centers provide therapy for people with this disease.

Other Interesting Information Q: What made you choose this particular disease? A: I chose this disease, because I had no idea what this disease was, but now that I know what it is, if I meet someone with Klinefelter’s syndrome, I could try to help and interact with them. Q: Include something else about this disorder that interests you. A: This disease, Klinefelter’s Syndrome, was named after Dr. Harry Klinefelter, he was the first diagnosed with the disease.
