California Mission Project Mr. B’s and Mr. C’s 4 th Grade Classes

San Diego de Alcala 1 st Mission Built Built by Father Serra in July of 1769 Named for Saint Didacus of Alcala Located 6 miles from the city of San Diego on Presidio Hill

Native Americans of San Diego Nervous of close contact with the missionaries Spanish missionaries brought gifts for the Native Americans Some natives stole goods from the missionaries

Life at the San Diego Mission Native American Children went to school during the day Not only did they learn to speak the Spanish Language, the Indian children also learned the Christian ways from the padres Their parents worked in the fields or learning a trade such as… weaving, painting, and carving.
