THE REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT...

SHIPPER’S RESPONSIBILITIES Ensure that all relevant persons have received training Ensure that the substances are not prohibited for transport Identify, classify, pack, mark, label and document Advance arrangements with the consignee and the carrier

DIVISION 6.2 – INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES 1. Category A: UN2814 or UN2900 Highly Infectious material and some cultures 2. Category B: UN3373 Proper shipping name is Biological substance, Category B

TRIPLE PACKAGING SYSTEM

PACKING INSTRUCTION 602 – Category A 1. Watertight primary receptacle/s (vial or tube) 2. Watertight secondary packaging (Plastic bottle/bag) 3. Absorbent material, sufficient to absorb entire contents 4. List of contents placed between secondary & outer packaging 5. Rigid outer packaging of adequate strength 6. Outer packaging bearing UN specification markings 7. Name & telephone number for person responsible for the shipment on the outside of the package

PACKING INSTRUCTION 650 – Category B 1. Leak proof primary receptacle/s 2. Leak proof secondary packaging 3. Absorbent material, sufficient material to absorb the entire content 4. Pressure test required, 95 kPa for Primary or secondary packaging 5. Outer packaging must not contain more than 4L 6. List of contents placed between secondary & outer packaging 7. Outer package must have minimum dimension of 100mm x 100mm 8. Must successfully pass drop test to 1.2m 9. Diamond label with “UN3373” and “Biological Substance, Category B” must appear on the outside 10.Dangerous goods shippers declaration not required and no UN specification markings are required

PACKING INSTRUCTION 904 – Dry Ice 1.Packaging must be able to permit the release of carbon dioxide gas 2.DGD is not required when dry ice is used as a refrigerant for a non DG 3.No UN specification packaging required 4.Package must be marked with: · Proper shipping name (Dry Ice or Carbon Dioxide, solid) · UN1845 · Class 9 · The number of packages; and · The net quantity of dry ice in each package
