ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct A Home-oriented IPTV Service Platform on Residential Gateway for Interworking between Home Network and IPTV October 2010 ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1 ETRI & KPU

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct April NY Meeting An introductory presentation was given as follows: –Interworking between HN and IPTV services –3 rd Party Participation in IPTV services –IPTV Service Platform over RG for HES Members’ Comments –Comparison with other SDOs’ standardization works –Concrete objective and scope

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct Interworking between HN and IPTV Services The home network (HN) has become a preferred environment for many end users to receive IP based multimedia services such as IPTV. –IPTV services are likely to be delivered using home networking technology. In order to provide IPTV users with good user experience and to bring down the costs, IPTV devices need to interact seamlessly with the home network and with each other on the home network.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct Interworking between HN and IPTV Services ITU-T Q.21/16, H (2008) –Architecture and functional requirements for Home Network supporting IPTV services Limitation on ITU-T H.622 –ITU-T H has been based on HGI and has focused mainly network issues for interworking between home network and IPTV service such as QoS, security, interoperability, network management and DNG, etc. –ITU-T H has not considered a 3 rd party participation in IPTV services.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct rd Party Participation in IPTV Services Why 3 rd Party Participation in IPTV Services? –A service provider who provides other service provider’s IPTV services to end-users. –With increasing number of the IPTV service providers, in order to encourage the successive growth of IPTV services, it is important to enable 3 rd party operators to provide various interactive user- oriented IPTV services by making the best use of open architecture and functionalities. –Analysts agree that the key to differentiation of IPTV services are value added services which in the long term require business collaborations of incumbents and 3 rd party service providers.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct rd Party Participation in IPTV Services ITU-T Standardization StandardsQuestion IPTV Functional Architecture (Y.1910)ITU-T Q5/9 Functional requirements of the service provider interface for television primary and secondary distribution and associated interactive services (J.704) ITU-T Q10/9 3 rd Party IPTV Brokering Service Scenario (Y.iptvbs)ITU-T Q8, Q14/13 IPTV Service Platform (HSTP.IPTV-ISPF)ITU-T Q13/16  Please refer the white paper for detailed descriptions of them.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct rd Party Participation in IPTV Services Limitations on ITU-T Works –Legacy IPTV service operator centralized scheme 3 rd party IPTV service providers can only provide services and contents through the service platform of legacy IPTV service provider based on a tariff or contract basis. Service Provider Service Provider Network Provider Network Provider Managed Network End- Users through STB End- Users through STB (Telco based or Cable based) Legacy IPTV Service 3 rd Party SP (a) 3 rd Party SP (a) CP (a) 3 rd Party SP (c) 3 rd Party SP (c) CP (c) CP (b) Open architecture and Functionalities for 3 rd Party IPTV Service Providers

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct rd Party Participation in IPTV Services Limitations on ITU-T Works –These schemes can be a 3 rd party participation only from the point of legacy IPTV service provider’s view. –From the point of end user’s view, these schemes might not be a true 3 rd party participation. End users in home can get only services and contents provided by legacy IPTV service providers as well as 3 rd party IPTV service providers that authorized by legacy IPTV service provider.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct OSGi Service Platform A well-known standard service platform in diverse application areas and markets The service aggregator is required to bundle services together to build an appealing package and allow multiple 3 rd party service providers to provide end users with application services in the form of bundles. –The service gateway operator, which might be Telco or Cable operator, delivers, starts, updates and removes bundled services for end users

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct OSGi Service Platform Limitations on OSGi Standard –Specifications have targeted too diverse application areas and markets such as home automation, mobile phones, automobiles, industrial automation, building automation, PDAs, grid computing, entertainment, fleet management and application servers. –Specifications for the IPTV service have not been considered concretely.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct OSGi Service Platform Limitations on OSGi Standard –Multiple 3 rd party service providers can share the OSGi service gateway through the OSAP, which means they cannot deliver their services locally and directly to end users.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct OSGi Service Platform Limitations on OSGi Standard –The OSGi service platform can be adopted for 3 rd party participation in IPTV services in order that 3 rd party IPTV service providers to execute and delivery their services and contents to end users. However, in this case, end users in home can get only services and contents bundled by the service aggregator and delivered by the service gateway operator although the OSGi service platform is adopted as an open platform.  Therefore, from the point of end user’s view, the 3 rd party participation in IPTV services using the OSGi specifications might not be a true 3 rd party participation.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct True 3 rd party participation A new standardized scheme is required for the true 3 rd party participation in IPTV services in order that –End users in home networks can get more and more opportunities for useful services and contents beyond legacy IPTV services from unlimited 3 rd party IPTV service providers. –3 rd party IPTV service providers can provide locally and directly diverse services and contents to end users, while they should be independent from legacy IPTV service providers.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct New Project For the true 3 rd party participation in IPTV, this new project proposes a service platform for 3 rd party IPTV service providers to provide locally and directly diverse home-oriented IPTV services and contents to end users. A Home-oriented IPTV Service Platform on Residential Gateway for Interworking between Home Network and IPTV (HISP-RG) A Home-oriented IPTV Service Platform on Residential Gateway for Interworking between Home Network and IPTV (HISP-RG)

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct Why “On the Residential Gateway”? In order that diverse 3 rd party IPTV service providers can access directly, the proposed service platform should reside on one of home devices such as –Residential Gateway for HES (ISO/IEC ) –Legacy IPTV Set-Top Box –Desktop PC, etc

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct Why “On the Residential Gateway”? Among them, the RG for HES can be a beautiful home device that can the proposed service platform resides on due to following RG’s inherent good properties as shown in ISO/IEC : –A networking device that connects home network domains to network domains outside the house. –An always-on, always-connected device. –A hub device that connects other home devices together. –An service delivery device that enables service and content providers to deliver services such as entertainment, video and broadband digital streams, monitoring for health care, security and occupancy, home appliance control and preventive maintenance, remote metering, and energy management.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct Objective of New Project HISP-RG provides –Open architecture and functionalities to enable 3 rd party IPTV service providers to deliver locally and directly home-oriented IPTV services and contents to end-users in home networks. –A “patch on” solution of the Residential Gateway for Home Electronic System (HES) in ISO/IEC , that is, not a “built in” solution.

ETRI-KPU ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1, Oct Scope of New Project New Project will –Introduce home-oriented IPTV services and contents that can be executed and delivered locally via the HISP-RG. –Define the open architecture and functionalities of HISP-RG –Specify their requirements. –Describe considerations on ISO/IEC for the HISP-RG. –Describe considerations on Security of HN –Presents a couple of use cases of the HISP-RG.
