Convergence?
Moore’s Law The number of transistors (and hence the power) of computer chips doubles every 18 months on average
Metcalfe’s Law The value of a network rises in proportion to the number of devices connected to it.
Moore’s Law Metcalfe’s Law + = Convergence
Hypernet Mobility Broadband Peer to Peer Pervasive Computing
What does convergence mean for the Broadcaster?
Everything’s going mobile
Collaboration
Creativity
The Audience Perspective Access to content via multiple media. Access to content via personal devices. Choice of content tailored and personalised to suit device. Access …any time, any device, anywhere. Interaction with content - and its makers. Becoming a provider.
The Broadcaster Perspective The demise of scheduled TV Need to deliver to all platforms in the future Able to gather content from anywhere, any time. Content must be deliverable to multiple devices Ability to collect input from viewers/listeners/ readers and selectively disseminate - the users talk back! No longer an asymmetrical world
Technology Convergence = Service Divergence
The transmitter is no longer the only way to get content to the audience.
Broadcasters are Meeting the Challenge
The production challenge 1. Economies of production - doing more for the same 2. Current workflows and systems will not support the new world 3. Production of content packages rather than individual items is a major challenge 4. Fully integrated and cross platform editorial propositions will be key 5. People issues - new ways of working with new editorial models 6. Create once, publish anywhere - understanding what this world really looks like
The Vision for 2010 All Broadcasters should be committed to the vision that by 2010, all programme post production and creation will be carried out on commodity technology using the general business networks and storage.
An On Demand BBC iPlayer Creative Archive Open Archive 7 day window …but still a huge demand for linear broadcasting
….But despite the technology Let’s not forget it’s just about telling stories
…and theatre
High Definition BBC HD Target all programmes HD by 2010 Test HD Channel running now BBC HD offering content Major UK public service events available free to air in HD HD TX of blue chip co-productions (Planet Earth, Galapagos etc.) Target specific high audience value programme to move HD Money targeted at infrastructure to produce on-going HD not one- off programmes
