DNA TECHNOLOGIES

What is DNA technology? The manipulation of DNA for many practical purposes Also called genetic engineering or genetic technology Can be used in medical, industrial, commercial, agricultural, and crime fields

Types of Genetic Technology DNA fingerprinting Recombinant DNA technology Genetically Engineered organisms Transgenic organisms Gene therapy Cloning Stem cells

Ethics Ethics seeks to determine what a person should do, or the best course of action, and provides reasons why. It also helps people decide how to behave and treat one another.

Bioethics The study of ethical issues related to DNA technologies. Involves scientists and nonscientists Identify and address ethical, legal, governmental and social issues Is a rapidly developing field Will confront all of us as our society moves forward with genetic technologies.

Key Questions What is the ethical question? What are the relevant facts? Who or What can be affected? What are the relevant ethical considerations?

Ethical Considerations Respect for Persons Minimize harm and maximize benefits Fairness
