What is genetic engineering ? Genetic engineering is the process of manually adding new DNA to an organism. Zino Morkache-Aerospace Department-MAE430
Genetic Engineering Process Step 1 Find an organism that have the desired gene Step 2 Extract the DNA from that organism Step 3 Locate and copy the one desired gene (recipe) from thousands of genes that were extracted. This is called gene cloning. Step 4 Modify slightly the gene to work in a more desirable way once inside the recipient organism. Step 5 Deliver the new gene(s), called a transgene into cells of the recipient organism. This is called transformation. Zino Morkache-Aerospace Department-MAE430
Positive Aspects of Genetic Engineering Medecine : Manufacturing drugs : Insulin Human growth hormones Vaccines Gene therapy Industry : Bacteria: Biofuel Cleaning up toxic waste Detecting arsenic in drinking water Agriculture and livestock farming : Genetically modified crops and fish Research : Create model animals, bacteria or virus and do laboratory research Zino Morkache-Aerospace Department-MAE430
