12 Attachment A USGS EROS Data Center Changes to USGS Geospatial Programs and Services August 17, Geospatial Information Office (GIO)…unify and integrate the elements of our geospatial programs and services 2. National Geospatial Programs Office 3. EDC “will be elevated to the status” of “national capability” 4. Geography Discipline will focus efforts on….research and applications

13 Attachment A USGS EROS Data Center National Capabilities: “activities that represent unique science capabilities that are not replicated elsewhere in the bureau.” Unique: EDC’s combination of engineering and scientific expertise collocated with the National Satellite Land Remote Sensing Data Archive. As a national capability, EDC will have increased visibility and opportunity to work across the organization in support Bureau and Department programs.

14 Attachment A USGS EROS Data Center Capabilities  Interdisciplinary scientific investigations from local to international scale and scope  Multi-mission, land remote sensing data collection  Data preservation, access, and distribution  Remote sensing education, training, and technical assistance  Integrated information technology and systems engineering  Synthesis and analysis of geospatial information and on-line support services

15 Attachment A USGS EROS Data Center “The time is now right and urgent to apply space technology towards the solutions of many pressing natural resource problems being compounded by population and industrial growth.” Secretary of the Interior, Stewart Udall, 1966
