Ship-based Repeat Hydrography: x-cutting issues: CLIVAR, Argo, OceanSITES Status Goal: To constrain basin-scale decadal changes of anthropogenic CO2 to ± 20% Global survey is ½ completed and on track for completion in 2012 Discovered many non-WOCE repeat hydrography programs Still problems with coverage and methods to determine anthropogenic CO2 System Evolution / Coordination International Repeat Hydrography and Carbon (IRHC) activity: IOCCP, CLIVAR- GSOP, SOLAS-IMBER Carbon Group will develop a joint Advisory Panel Define a ship-based repeat hydrography network for coordination / tracking, incorporating needs and contributions from other programs such as Argo, OceanSITES, Geotraces, etc. ; Develop guidelines for a single international information center and data directory for hydrography that has support and buy-in from the community; Review and provide guidance on the need to update the WOCE hydrographic manual. Data and Data Products Global dataset (GLODAP, CARINA, CarboOcean, CLIVAR) merged and with 1 st level QC to be released by June nd level QC being carried out by Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Ocean synthesis groups. Community software is being developed to semi-automate 2 nd level QC procedures. Some important areas are still data sparse. Research groups looking at techniques for estimating anthropogenic CO2; high-quality nutrient data is a potential problem.

Surface Carbon SOOP: x-cutting issues: JCOMM SOT /atmos. CO2 community Status Goal: To constrain seasonal to interannual variability and climate sensitivity of air-sea CO2 flux on basin and global scales to ± 0.2 PgC/y (regional / basin scales) Nearly 60% increase in number of underway lines since 2005 Most-used system is now commercially available (although slow…) May implement a new intercomparison experiment in 2008 System Evolution / Coordination Use available data to determine if we can meet goals. If yes, what is optimal system; If no, why (data, process understanding, both). The current North Atlantic system can meet stated goals. O.S.E. will be carried out to determine optimal observing network required Carrying out comparative analysis of global seasonal flux estimates (significant discrepancies among 5 groups) and will hold a targeted workshop on this + “ocean CO2 from space” to examine extrapolation techniques, proxies, data assimilation methods, neural network techniques, etc. Data and Data Products Agreements on global standard dataset and regular product development Global standard surface CO2 data set being developed (3 million points from >550 cruises from in common format 1 st level QC database) Regional synthesis groups looking at 2 nd level QC issues, regional data to contribute to global standard data set, analysis of processes controlling regional variability. Development of a Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) annual data product

Time Series Carbon: x-cutting issues: OceanSITES Status Ocean carbon community has not set agreed science goal for a network of time series stations. (problem ?) Census includes buoys and ships. ~ 120% increase in number of stations measuring carbon in the open ocean; (19 coastal / marginal seas stations now included on maps) Better / more sensors for pCO2; still sensor-limited for other parameters (DIC, Alk, nutrients, biogeochem.) System Evolution / Coordination Despite agreements that time series stations are critical and unique for quantifying and understanding ocean carbon changes and drivers, still have problems with funding and support Re-engage fully with OceanSITES group Take a pro-active role in promoting time series science for the carbon and biogeochemistry community through a targeted workshop: possibly Hawaii, April / May Data and Data Products Work in cooperation with OceanSITES to ensure needs of carbon community are met Nominate our CO2 data managers to the OceanSITES data group / support their participation in meetings and activities Workshop may develop carbon groups to produce synthesis papers to demonstrate value of carbon time series data
