Mark Mark Parable of the Sower and the Seed

Mark Again he began to teach beside the sea. Such a very large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the sea and sat there, while the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:

Mark “Listen! A sower went out to sow.

Mark And as he sowed, some seed fell alongside the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”

Mark And he said, “Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” What does it mean?

Mark And as he sowed, some seed fell alongside the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”

When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. Mark And he said, “Let anyone with ears to hear listen!”

“To you has been given the secret of the dominion of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; Mark 4.11 What “secret of the dominion of God”? When was it given? Does this mean that I am an outsider?

… in order that 'they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.'" Mark 4.12 As the reader, what is at stake? What are the consequences of being an outsider?

And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? Mark 4.13 So, then, are the disciples in or out? Am I in or out? Was Jesus being ironic in verses 11-12? “To you has been given the secret of the dominion of God? And for those outside, everything comes in parables?”

Mark The sower sows the word. 15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. 17 But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing.

Mark And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.” As the reader, now where does this leave you?

“To you has been given the secret of the dominion of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; Mark 4.11 Who do you now understand the “you” to be? How do you know if you are in or out? What is the appeal of knowing the secret?

The DUH-sciples in Mark Will they ever learn? In the Gospel of Mark

Mark 6.34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6.34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he …

Mark When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat." 37 But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?" >>> 5000 men fed

Mark Not long after… In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said to them, 2 "I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way--and some of them have come from a great distance." 4 His disciples replied, "How can one feed these people with bread here in the desert?" >>> 4000 people fed

Mark In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said to them, 2 "I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way--and some of them have come from a great distance." 4 His disciples replied, "How can one feed these people with bread here in the desert?" >>> 4000 people fed

Mark And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he went across to the other side. 14 Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And he cautioned them, saying, "Watch out -- beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."

Mark They said to one another, "It is because we have no bread." 17 And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember?

Mark When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?" They said to him, "Twelve." 20 "And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?" And they said to him, "Seven." 21 Then he said to them, "Do you not yet understand?"

How do these two accounts of the feeding function in the story? How do these two accounts of a miraculous feeding function in the discourse?

The DUH-sciples in Mark Will they ever learn? In the Gospel of Mark

Mark and Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" 34 But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest.

Mark and He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all."

Mark and Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, 37 "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

Mark and People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples

Mark and People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. What do you think?

Mark and But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Mark Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." What do you understand this to mean?

Mark Truly I tell you, whoever does not welcome the kingdom of God as [you would welcome] a little child will never enter it." What do you understand this to mean? 37 "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." Mark 10.15

The DUH-sciples in Mark Will they ever learn? In the Gospel of Mark

Mark 14: They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. 34 And he said to them, "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake." 35 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 He said, "Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want."

Mark 14: He came and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour?

Disciples in Mark Mark 8:34 "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. In the Gospel of Mark

Mark They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Mark Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 49 Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you." 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again.”

Mark Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. When they were approaching Jerusalem…

What is your overall impression of the disciples? Arrogant because of their relationship with Jesus Well-meaning but absolutely clueless Weak and misguided Good negative role models Projects still under Jesus’ development They just don’t get it Pretty normal human beings Disciples in Mark

The depiction of the disciples in Mark encourages me to be a better disciple than they were makes me wonder if anyone can be a true disciple suggests that you can really mess up and still be a disciple of Jesus Disciples in Mark
