The Basics of Grant Writing and Research Karen Edmonds, Programs and Services Director FOOD for Lane County July 14, 2010

What is a grant? Money – with a few strings attached A way to match a funder with someone who needs funds A tool to implement a thoughtful plan from a committed organization

Who has grants to give? Governments Companies and businesses Foundations Individuals

What are some funding sources? In billions: Source: Choquette, R. (2007) Grant Proposal Writing

Private sources include: Source: Choquette, R. (2007) Grant Proposal Writing In billions:

The grantor decides Who they will give to How much to give For what purpose For how long How they will decide among applications What reports will be required to show progress, results, and/or how money was used

The applicant (you) needs to show You need the money You will manage it responsibly You have clear goals and the means to accomplish them Your project meets the mission and purpose of the grantor You can measure your results

Top Two Tips for Grant Writing Find the right funder that matches your project Follow the directions - exactly

When writing a grant application Plan before writing Start with goals and objectives Show how you will measure outcomes Follow instructions Have others review and edit Submit on time

Focus on What you are going to do Who will benefit Why it is important

You may also be asked to submit Budget – for the project and/or organization Matching or in-kind support Plan for sustaining the project long-term If applicable: IRS Determination letter List of Board of Directors and affiliations Letters of support Other information in appendices

General guidelines Establish a relationship with funders Present proposal in a positive manner Present only what is requested Address every area requested Be consistent when submitting to more than one funder

Avoid Using a negative, pleading, or impending doom approach Missing the deadline Using jargon Submitting a proposal without approval of your administration and/or Board of Directors

Where to find funders Online databases – Foundation Center Online Company websites Electronic list servs Directories Books & periodicals Local service organizations Organizations with a similar mission

Database research tips Search by: Field of interest Type of support needed Geographic focus Grant maker state Congressional district Population to be served Key words

Following up on leads Determine if it is a good fit Contact funder to ask specific questions Identify application process: Letter of Inquiry or full proposal

Submit and follow up If you receive the grant: Celebrate! Be ready to mobilize Establish a tracking system for what you have said you will measure If you do not receive the grant: Don’t get discouraged Ask funders for feedback Continue to refine your approach
