HIV AND AIDS MAINSTREAMING Experiences from Federation of the Rural and Urban Poor Centre for Community Organization and Development Regional Workshop on HI/AIDS and Housing 15 th to 19 September, 2014

Background on our work..  Mobilizing communities to address development challenges.  Community-led data collections through profiling, enumeration and mapping.  Planning or re-planning of communities/ settlements  Development of Community Development Strategies (CDS) used to lobby Government and other stakeholders.  Improving access to proper housing, water and sanitation, clean energy.  Encouraging ‘saving with a purpose’ through Saving Groups.  Empowering people socio-economically through income generating activities.

Our approach.. “Learning Exchanges are conducted which allows one community to learn from another ”.

Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS  Dialogue is promoted among members of the community. HIV testing among community members as well as saving groups is encouraged so that they know their HIV status.  PLHIV are mentored on developing herbal gardens.  Members of savings groups are supported through ‘top-up’ to access basic needs without discrimination.  PLHIV link with Support Groups in their area where they interact with others also HIV positive. Activities conducted include group therapies.  Communities are supported with trainings on Home Based Care through our partnership with the Malawi Home Based Care Alliance.

Thank You Zikomo
