Km  Population (2007 Census): 20,530,714  Life expectancy (2007): 36.9  Governance  Democratic elections  11 Provinces, 128 Districts, 352 Administrative Locations and 43 Municipalities  Illiteracy Rate (2007): 47.0%  GDP – average economic growth rate ( ): 7%.  GDP – per capita (2007) U.S. $900  FDI: US$7.5 billion (2007) – which generated 20,000 jobs

Skills and Knowledge for Sustained Development: experience of Mozambique  Efforts have been done aiming at achieving the universal primary education;  The PRSP emphasizes the need to improve and increase the access to technical and professional education;  Creation of the Ministry of Science and technology to lead the process of R&D initiaves;

However:  There is a need to continuosly putting emphasis in the vocational education throughout all the levels of the national education system;  Education has to be more relevant and oriented to market demand; 4 Skills and Knowledge for Sustained Development: experience of Mozambique

 There has been established simplified procedurers for enterprise registration and licensing- “one-stop shop”;  Free economic zones are beeing established;  There is more space for dialogue between the public and the private sector  Recently was established the small and medium enterprises promotion institute; 5 Business environment focus Skills and Knowledge for Sustained Development: experience of Mozambique

Governance:  In Mozambique good Governance is recognized as a key of sucess and is highly considered in Government plans; However:  There is still a need to improve the efficiency of human and financial resources ;  Red Tap still in place in public sector. 6 Skills and Knowledge for Sustained Development: experience of Mozambique

 Consolidate the national vocational education system to strenghten the human capital ;  Invest more on integrated infrastructure: roads, energy, ports,communications (ICT included) for the industrialization of the country;  Consolidate the free economic zones to attract more National and FDI flows 7 Study visit lessons to be taken
