China’s trade surplus was from selling silk porcelain and tea in exchange for gold and silver. The western countries had a trade deficit by buying more than was sold to China. 2. Also British citizens were given extra territoriality, giving them right to live under British laws and tried in own courts.

OPIUM WARS Chinese were addicted and the Government wanted British to stop importing opium. As a result the two countries went to war.
