Only Brits please... ❖ Immigration was a major problem during WWI> slowed down> no immigrants means less workers, money makers, investors etc. ❖ After the war the Canadian government started advertising the Canadian West as a place of dreams. ❖ Even though they wanted people to come to Canada, they really only wanted British immigrants. ❖ Foreigners were shut out.

A country of xenophobes ❖ During the war Canada had become very suspicious of foreigners and their motives. This suspicion decreased our tolerance of foreigners ❖ This new-found xenophobia was reflected in the changes made to the Immigration Act in 1919

Immigration Act ❖ All immigrants must pass a compulsory English Literacy test ❖ Mennonites, Doukhobors, and Hutterites were stopped from coming into Canada> when they were previously let into Canada they were exempted from military service and had other special treatments> this made other Canadians hostile towards them.

No Asians Allowed ❖ 1922: British Empire Act is created to encourage white British settlers. This act allowed the government to pay for the travel costs of white immigrants ❖ 1923: Chinese Exclusion act is passed that bans all Chinese from immigrating to Canada (Unless you were a student or merchant), it also makes it difficult for Africans and south Asians to immigrate.

More immigration and employment problems ❖ 1926: Prime Minister King loosens the ban a little bit to allow more Eastern and Southern Europeans into the country. ❖ Poles, Ukrainians and Germans seized the chance to come to Canada ❖ 1927: Canadians in prairie cities start to complain that the new immigrants are not staying on the farms like they promised and are flocking to the city to steal jobs. ❖ The government responds by restricting European entry.
