PHASE 1 – Introduction to Concept

Step #1 – Prepping the Paper Get out a piece of paper. Put your name, date, and period at the top right hand corner. Title: “Introduction to Immigration”

Step #2 – Photo Analysis 1.Who: (subject) 2.What: (Action) 3.When: (Time) 4. Where: (Location) 5. Why: (Reason) 6. How: (Process)

Step #3 – Preview Questions A. When are the highest levels of immigration? B. What might account for these spikes? Why would people come here? (i.e. What is the “pull” of America?”) C. What factors would “push” people to leave their country? D. What about the lowest levels? What might account for those drops? E. Who knows something about their own immigrant roots and can point out when family members came to this country?

Step #4 – Now lets look at the graph. Check your answers. How correct were you?

Step #5 – The Influence of Advertising Look a the ad to the right. If you were living in a poor or hurting foreign nation and you saw this ad what would be your reaction?

Step #6 – Now lets dig deeper into the numbers Click on the link below to be taken to an interactive map on immigration data from 1820 – 2010 Link: htm htm Questions to Answer: 1 - What is the total number of immigrants who came to the United States from 1820 to 2010? 2- From 1820 to 2010, which three countries had the highest number of immigrants come to the United States. 3 – Choose one on the countries from above and a decade. Why do you think there was such a sudden influx of people from this region into the U.S. ? 4 - In the 1930's, immigration to the United Stated declined. Why? What was happening in the 1930's in the United States?

Step 7.3 – Photo Analysis Version #2 Now that we have broken photo #1 (late 1800s) into three sections I want you to answer these two questions about it. 1 – What three things can you infer from this photo? 2- What questions come to your mind as you look at the photo?

Step 7.5 – Photo Analysis Version #2 Now that we have broken down photo #2 (early 19 th century) I want you to answer the two questions again. 1 – What three things can you infer from this photo? 2- What questions come to your mind as you look at the photo?

Step # 7.6 – Comparing the Changes Having looked at and broken down both images answer these two questions. 1. What are the contrasts in the images? 2. How do these contrasts reflect the society that immigrants encountered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?

Step #8 – Audio Stories Instructions We are going to head over to Storycorps.com and listen to a couple quick stories from people that immigrated to the United States. Links sheena-jacob/ sheena-jacob/ Questions: 1 – What were their experiences like? 2 – What do stories like these teach you about immigration?

Step # 9 – Cartoon Analysis 1)List the objects/people you see in the cartoon. 2)Which of the objects on your list are symbols? 3)What do you think each symbol means? 4)Which words or phrases in the cartoon appear to be the most significant? Why do you think so? 5)List adjectives that describe the emotions portrayed in the cartoon. 6)Describe the action taking place in the cartoon. 7)Explain the message of the cartoon. 8)What groups would agree/disagree with the cartoon's message? Why?

Phase II – Discussion Question Directions: Questions to Answer with a partner. You have 5 minutes then we are going to share out. 1)Should people be allowed into the United States? Explain your answer. 2)Should there be a process? Explain your answer. 3)What would make the process equal? Explain your answer. 4)Should the process be intense and lengthy? What would be the pros and cons? Explain your answer. 5)Why should officials be strict on who gets into the country? Explain your answer.

Phase III – Immigration Simulation Step 1 – Role Cards Handed Out Step 2 – Immigrant Cards Handed Out Step 3 – Student volunteers will share out their roles. Remaining Students – You will need a piece of paper for Observational purposes. We will run through three immigrants. Questions to Answer: 1 – Who made it through the inspection? 2 – What did you notice about the inspectors ? 3 – Did the process seem fair?
