Naval Battles By Nicole Squires

USS Constitution Known as Old Ironsides. Is a wooden hulled, three-masted frigate of the US Navy. Oldest commissioned (still working) ship in the world, still afloat. Constitution was one of six frigates authorized for construction by an act of Congress in Joshua Humphreys designed them to be the Navy’s capital ships.

“Ship of the Line” Was named for these warships place in the line of battle used by navies at the times of the War of The heaviest and most accurate broadside usually won the battle.

Schooner Was the most elegant and manageable sailing vessles of the age of sail. The name comes from the Dutch meaning lovely or beautiful. Two masts, main mast, foremas with the forward mast being shorter than the rear mast.

Frigate The term referred to ships that were often as long as a ship of the line and were square- rigged on all three masts.

Sloop Is another naval term that loosely applied Ship smaller than a frigate

Battle of Lake Erie Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry: Had built nine ships. Captain Robert Barclay: Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry Opponent. Six Vessels. American fleet was trapped by sand bar in harbor. Barclays ship maintained a blocade of Presque Isle unit July 1813 when sailed away for reinforcements. In mid- afternoon on September 10, Perry's flagship was destroyed. Commander transferred over to another ship. Barclay was wounded and taken prisoner along with other British sailors. British squadron captured and taken back as prizes. American Forces then got in complete control of Lake Erie.
