PIONEERS – HEROES IN THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR The theme of the lesson is

People of our country keep memory about the heroes of the Great Patriotic war

 A lot of children bravely fought with the enemy.  Many of them were awarded the medals and orders.  And four of them got the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.  Their names are Lyonya Golikov, Valya Kotik, Marat Kazey and Zina Portnova.

Lyonya Golikov  Lyonya Golikov lived in a village Lukino.  He had two sisters. The children helped his mother about the house.  When his father got ill and couldn’t earn money he began to work.

 One Sunday morning he heard : War, war”.  Soon the Nazis occupied their village.  Lyonya joined to the partisan group.

 He took part in some risky operations- the partisans went to the railway to blow up enemy troop (военные) trains.

 He also was given the highest award the Hero of the Soviet Union for obtaining very important documents. He killed the German general and took his bag with top secret documents.  But he was killed in this war.

Valya Kotik  Valya Kotik was born in small village in Ukraine.  He had a brother who was a bit older.

 When the war started his father went to the front.  Valya and his friends began to co-operate with underground group.  They counted enemy tanks and soldiers and gave the information for the Red Army.

 Then they went to the partisan group. They helped to blow up enemy troop trains.  Once the boy informed about the danger. It saved the lives of many people.  Valya was awarded a medal for his courage.

 It was Valya’s 14 th birthday when he learnt that the Red Army had freed his native Shepetovka.  The commander said that he could go home but he wanted to stay with partisans. Valya and some partisans were ordered to protect the ammunition dump (склад боеприпасов).  Shots could be heard all around  The bullet (пуля) hit him to the stomach.

 Valya Kotik was buried in Shepetovka in the garden of his school.  After the war he was posthumously ( посмертно) awarded the Order of the Patriotic war and in 1958 the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.

Marat Kazey  Marat was seven years old when his father died.  Their family was quite small; just him, his mother and his elder sister Ada.  Their house was in the village a few kilometres away from Minsk.  Nazis arrested and killed his mother.

 Marat went to the partisan camp.  One day Marat and other few partisans stole enemy’s important documents in the nearest village and drove off their car.  One spring day Marat and his friend were sent to get information about enemy troops again. They were riding horses. Soon they looked a lot of German soldiers. Marat’s friend ran back to the camp to ask the partisans to help. Nazis began to shoot at the boy.

 Marat was waiting for his friend and help.  He hid in the bush and waited for the enemy to come closer.  Then the boy killed a lot of German soldiers.  When the bullets (патроны) were over in the gun he stood on his feet.  He had a grenade in his hand. The moment a few fascists tried to catch him the grenade exploded.  Marat died on the 11 th of May 1944.

Zina Portnova  Zina Portnova was born on the 20 th of February 1926 in Leningrad.  In the beginning of June 1941 she came on the school holiday in the village Zuya near the station Obol in Vitebskaya area.

 In1942 she became a member of the Obolskiy underground organisation “Young avengers”  Working in the dining room of German officers, she poisoned food. Wishing to prove to Germans the non- participation, she ate the poisoned soup. Only miracle remained her alive.

 Since the August of 1943 she was a member of partisan group.  In December, when she returned from the task, Nazis caught her.

 During one of the talks with fascists she caught a pistol of the inspector from the table, shot him and two more officers, tried to run.  But fascists caught, tortured and shot her. It was on the 10 th of January in 1944.

 In 1958 she was posthumously (посмертно) awarded the Order of the Patriotic war and the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
