 Today, the outcome of the war with Mexico and how Polk helped our country achieve our Manifest Destiny.  Tomorrow (Wednesday) you will have a test on the readings from chapters 12 and 13 only.  You will not be permitted to use your notes.  You will be permitted use one 3”x 5” note card.  Information on the note card must be handwritten and not shared with others.  You must have your name on the card and turn it in with your test.

Major westward population shift. The population vote was close, but not the electoral

 Began over a territorial dispute (see pg 361….the green area).  Not all Americans were in favor of the war (some thought we unnecessarily provoked this conflict).  Conflict lasted 21 months and resulted in the Mexican Cession.

 Virtually completes vision for country, acquiring Texas, Oregon Territory and the Mexican Cession.  Lowers tariff of the south  Modernizes the U.S. Treasury.  Oversaw the founding of the Naval Academy and the Smithsonian  Doesn’t seek reelection: “I accomplished everything I set out to do in one term.”  Died 3 months after his term was up.
