Visual and Sound Effects How does each effect what is happening in the movies or media?

Visual Effects 1. Color

Color in Media and Advertising RedThe color of fire and blood – conveys energy, love, war, power It brings text and images to the foreground. YellowThe color of the sun – conveys joy, cheerfulness, happiness. Attention getter, also for promoting leisure. BlueThe color of the sky and ocean – conveys trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence. Provides a calming effect.

Color (Continued) PurpleIt is found rarely in nature. Symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition Represents wealth and extravagance. GreenGreen is the color of nature. Conveys growth, harmony, freshness. Strong emotional correspondence to safety and healing.

Color (Continued) BlackConveys power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. Can represent strength and authority. As a background it makes many other colors stand out. WhiteConveys light, goodness, innocence, purity. Suggests simplicity, cleanliness.

Visual Effects -- Lighting What might it mean? If the scene has little lighting… –Foreshadowing a surprising event –Symbolizing the confusion of the character –Mood -- Makes the audience feel suspense, anxiety, or sympathy for the character –How might little lighting effect a… Character vs character conflict? Character vs. group conflict? Character vs. environment conflict? Character vs. technology conflict Character vs. self conflict?

Visual Effects -- Lighting What might it mean? If the scene has lighting focused on only one spot… –Shows the perspective of the character – the audience sees only what the character sees –Symbolizes clarity or understanding for the character –Symbolize confusion or anger of the character –Mood – to make the audience feel the anger or confusion too –Shows only one part of the setting or only one character to so the audience is focused only on it – mysteries –Mood -- To keep the audience in suspense of what is happening outside of that spotlight

Lighting What might it mean? If the scene has bright lighting … –Symbolizes clarity or understanding for the character – ex. Sun rising over the horizon –Mood -- To keep the audience feel secure and happy about what has happened or going to happen –How might bright lighting effect a… Character vs character conflict? Character vs. group conflict? Character vs. environment conflict? Character vs. technology conflict Character vs. self conflict?

Visual Effects 3. Camera Angles

Camera Angles Have similar effects on mood and audience as Lighting

Camera Angle Terminology Close-up - shows details about the character, object, or setting that is being focused one Medium shot – shows the characters in their specific setting Long shot - shows the characters in their LARGER setting Can you guess the effect of… Zoom in, Zoom out, Fade in, Fade out, the camera pans or is panning others?

What if? the camera focused on only one spot… –Camera on the shoulder of one character = –Shows the perspective of the character – the audience sees only what the character sees –Camera in a medium shot= –Shows only one part of the setting or only one character to so the audience is focused only on it –To keep the audience in suspense of what is happening outside of that camera angle
