EUROPEAN FASHION Comparing the past and present fashions of France, Spain, and England By: Katie Buecker

LEARNING TARGET I can explain how culture (fashion) defines my chosen group in the world today and how this group shows a unique perspective.

FRANCE: PAST In the late 1600s, France, and especially the gorgeous city of Paris, became the leader of the European fashion world. The fabulous attire of Louis XIV’s court inspired many wealthy people all over Europe.

FRENCH FASHION

FRANCE: PRESENT The truly chic women of France might wear casual clothes, but the true superiority of their outfits simply comes from how they put it all together. These women tend to wear fitted clothes that suit their frame.

FRENCH FASHION

SPAIN: PAST In Spain, a lot of the color black was used in their designs. The country’s sense of style was overriding in the Golden Age, which was around the middle of the 16 th century to the middle of the 17 th century.

SPANISH FASHION

SPAIN: PRESENT Today, the tradition of using black in Spain’s clothing continues. Even the highest designers from Spain do just that. Black is beautiful, in either high fashion or everyday clothes.

SPANISH FASHION

ENGLAND: PAST In England, if you followed the proper fashion guidelines, you could rise to the distinguished title of a gentlewoman. The most esteemed fashionable women believed that the fancier and more elaborately you dressed, the better. For example, the higher the hats they wore and the wider the skirts and dresses, the more men would take notice.

ENGLISH FASHION

ENGLAND: PRESENT The British tend to dress just as we do in the United States, but their fashion trends are more closely attached to Europe. People tend to dress more casually, although some older women wear dresses. Trousers are more common.

ENGLISH FASHION

CONCLUSION In conclusion, I’m sure that you have realized that in both the past and the present, Europeans not only have a high sense of style, but also understand the power and importance of great quality.
