Are YOU ready? Middle East Test Review

Why is fresh water such a valuable resource to the people living in the Middle East?

Answer: Fresh water is very limited in the Middle East! *This region has been in a drought *Dams have been built limiting water in other countries *Pollution (chemical fertilizers)

How does oil form?

Answer: 1. Plants and animals die in the ocean 2. Over time, the remains turn into rock 3. Weight from the water and heat from the Earth’s core core change the remains into oil.

What does desalination mean?

Answer: Desalination is the process of removing salt from seawater. Only a few Middle Eastern countries can afford to do this!

What about desertification?

Answer: Desertification is when land becomes more desert like. Much of the Middle East is experiencing desertification!

What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources?

Answer: A nonrenewable resource takes so long to form that it can’t be replaced! Oil is a nonrenewable resource. A renewable resource, such as trees, can be replaced quickly.

What does Gross Domestic Product refer to?

Answer: Gross Domestic Product refers to the total wealth of a country.

Ok, now try this! What does per capita gross domestic product refer to?

Answer: Per capita gross domestic product refers to the average income of the people in a country.

What does OPEC stand for?

Answer: OPEC stands for Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries

What are the goals of OPEC?

Answer: To steady the supply of oil flowing out of this region and keep money flowing in!

Why is OPEC so powerful?

Answer: OPEC controls much of the oil in the world market!

What countries is the Middle East are OPEC members?

Answer: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates belong to OPEC.

Name the top three countries in the Middle East with the largest oil reserves!

Answer: Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq have the largest oil reserves in the region.

Why are there some countries in the Middle East with large oil reserves still impoverished?

Answer: In general, oil has improved the lives of people in the Middle East. However, there are still some countries (Iraq) that has spent its money on buying weapons and war. In countries such as this, the literacy rate is poor and life expectancy short!
