Before we start… What is a podcast? What do we need to make/listen to them? How can a student use them? How can the teacher use them? What is iTunes? Is it useful to us in podcasting?

What is a podcast Sound or video recording Syndicated ( RSS) Usually on a regular basis. Can be consumed or produced ConsumeProduce StudentStudents use them for own learning Students produce them in class or out of class TeacherTeacher uses them for own learning Students listen to them

Why are they so relevant to language teaching? Focus on speaking/listening Portable ( add them to your iPod, phone etc) talk about terms such as ubiquitous/pervasive Regular Lots of subjects ( interests of students) Authentic or made for language learning Life long learning Own time, ( play back as many times as you want) Learning outside the class Abundance of material ( think about 10 years ago) Linked to Krashen’s idea of input Linked to ideas of immersion

Problems Can’t properly search them ( metatags) Information overload If teacher podcasts lecture then why bother to come to class Copyright Can’t be skimmed for suitability Technical issues
