Why make a data table?  Data tables are a necessary part of any science experiment.  They help organize the results into an understandable fashion.  They allow the reader to translate numbers into ideas and trends or patterns.  They help to compare data from the experiment.

What are the Parts of a Data Table? A title which describes the variables and what is being measured Example: The Effect of Different Physical Activities on Heart Rate Variables: A header for the independent variable which you deliberately change A header for the dependent variable which changes due to the independent variable.

What else does a data table have? Measurable units shownRepeated Trials

Why Repeated Trials Helps to find an average Add the total of the trials and divide by the number of trials Reduces the risk of experimental errors Run 3 or more trials to ensure results are more reliable

How is a Data Table Set Up? 1.Make a grid containing at least 5 columns across and 3 or more rows down. 2.Write a title at the top which identifies the independent and dependent variables. Effect of Different Physical Activities on Heart Rate

Then What? 3. Label the column on the left with the independent variable or what is purposefully changed 4. Label the columns on the right with the dependent variable 5. Leave room for at least 3 or more trials 6. Leave room for the average too. Effect of Different Physical Activities on Heart Rate Different Activities Heart Trial 1 rate Trial 2 (bpm) Trial 3 Average Running Yoga Walking Biking

What’s Next? 7. Collect data and record it in the appropriate boxes. 8. Check data table for completeness and any errors of math or data placement. Effect of Different Physical Activities on Heart Rate Different Activities Heart Trial 1 rate Trial 2 (bpm) Trial 3 Average bpm Running Yoga Walking Biking

Now Practice Making A Data Table. Create a data table related to an experiment in which different numbers of coils of wire were wound around an electromagnet to determine how many paper clips that the magnet could pick up. Do all 8 steps you have learned. a.When 5 coils were wound 3, 5, and 4 paper clips were picked up. b.When 10 coils were wound 7, 8, and 6 paper clips were picked up. c.When 15 coils were wound 11, 10, and 12 paper clips were picked up. d.When 20 coils were wound 15, 13, and 14 paper clips were picked up.
