Computer Aided Manufacturing BIM Curriculum 10

Topics  Definitions  CAM in the AEC Industry  CAM Workflow with BIM  Case Studies

Definitions  CAM (Computer-aided manufacturing) refers to software that is used to generate the instruction codes for a CNC machine in order to cut out a shape designed in a computer-aided design (CAD) system.  CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, and refers specifically to the computer control of machine tools for the purpose of (repeatedly) manufacturing complex parts in metal, wood or other materials

CAM in the Construction Industry Customization  Contemporary architecture is moving towards free form shapes and complex structures. CNC machines can produce even the most complicated custom building elements with high precision as designed in the BIM/CAD application. Prefabrication  Prefabrication of building structures requires integrated design and production solutions. The combination of BIM applications with CAM software offers a smooth workflow from design to manufacturing. Frank O. Gehry

Prefabrication: Area of use in AEC  Log-Houses  Stud Walls  Wall Panels  Steel Structures

Case Study: Log Home Solution From design to manufacturing: Graphisoft’s integrated Log- Home Solution in practice

Design The architect and the customer prepare the conceptual design of the log house.

 Creating walls and slabs using standard ArchiCAD tools.  The ArchiCAD wall tool supports log walls. Structural Modeling

Specially developed doors and windows are available from the Log-Home library. Placing Doors and Windows

A unique ID is assigned to every log wall in the building for the exact identification of logs Assigning Wall ID-s

Before creating the wall views the program collects all the necessary information about the building from the user. Creating Wall Drawings 1.

A side view of each walls are generated with the previously defined wall names. Then the views are automatically decomposed to logs. Creating Wall Drawings 2.

Quantities of logs and other building materials are automatically derived from the model. Quantity Take-offs

 The input file for log manufacturing is automatically generated from the model in Log Home Solution.  The file format is compliant with the CNC machines’ requirements.  The resulting file is fed into the CNC machine.  The machine first sorts the information to use the raw materials in the most economic way. After sorting, the logs are manufactured one by one.  Every log gets a sticker to help during the construction. Log Manufacturing

 The logs are packed according to their vertical position in the house.  This way the packs can be opened one by one in the correct order at the construction site. Packaging and Shipping

On-site Construction  The logs are assembled according to the construction documentation created in Log Home Solution  The stickers placed on logs helps to minimize the moving of materials on the construction site

Case Study: Steel Construction
