Predesign Conceptual Design Design Development Detailed Design & Documentation Construction Operations and Maintenance

Understand requirements for the project and the existing site conditions/context What to do? Study local climate Understand how the space is going to be used Aligning goals Reading applicable codes and laws Look at prior projects for inspiration Study existing conditions of the site

Begin to understand potential and limits of passive design strategies Opportunities for renewable energy Explore the role of material selection Set targets for sustainability, such as reaching net zero or certifying the building through LEED or a similar program

Explore alternate building and system options Building geometry is still evolving Take advantage of wind/sun for passive design strategies Primary focus for energy efficiency Daylighting and glare Natural ventilation Shading and solar gains Distribution of internal loads Envelope materials

Refine the whole building design Details of materials Spaces Building and mechanical systems Work out passive design details Better understanding of Thermal/visual comfort Understand what active systems are needed to supplement the passive design

Final Design has been aligned so this is where construction/creation of the building information model Materials and building products are specified HVAC and lighting systems are designed

Design has been fully worked out by engineers/architects Drawings are fully detailed with all construction/connections and systems designed This phase is drive by the building contractor

Building has been built or retrofit Prepare for occupancy Give help with how to maintain materials/building Test and monitor systems
