What is a “disciple”? Not equal to “convert” or “believer”Not equal to “convert” or “believer” Secular usage:Secular usage: “A man is called a disciple when he binds himself to someone else in order to acquire his practical and theoretical knowledge. He may be an apprentice in a trade, a student of medicine, or a member of a philosophical school. One can only be a disciple in the company of a master or a teacher”

What is a “disciple”? New Testament Usage:New Testament Usage: To be a disciple of someone means that you choose to follow that person and give that person your exclusive allegiance. Becoming a disciple is a commitment of your whole self to another person as your master and as your teacher.

What is a “disciple”? Usage in Matthew 28: Usage in Matthew 28: Men and women from every nation who choose to follow Jesus and give Him their exclusive allegiance as master and teacher. - Includes belief in Jesus - But goes beyond belief in Jesus

How do we “make disciples”? 1.Become a disciple yourself –Begins with belief –Requires commitment to follow and obey –Expected of all believers –Usually requires repetition

How do we “make disciples”? 1.Become a disciple yourself 2.Share your faith with the lost – “Baptize” = the completion of evangelism 3.Train those who believe to obey Jesus Colossians 1:28 We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.

How do we “make disciples”? 1.Become a disciple yourself 2.Share your faith with the lost –“Baptize” = the completion of evangelism 3.Train those who believe to obey Jesus 1 Thessalonians 2:8 Having so fond an affection for you, we were well- pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us.

What holds us back? I’m not adequate; too intimidatingI’m not adequate; too intimidating –Disciples of Jesus, not disciples of you! –You don’t have to do it all 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.

What holds us back? I’m not adequate; too intimidatingI’m not adequate; too intimidating I don’t have anyone to discipleI don’t have anyone to disciple –Focus on people already in your life 2 Timothy 3:14-15 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

What holds us back? I’m not adequate; too intimidatingI’m not adequate; too intimidating I don’t have anyone to discipleI don’t have anyone to disciple –Focus on people already in your life 2 Timothy 1:5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.

What holds us back? I’m not adequate; too intimidating I’m not adequate; too intimidating I don’t have anyone to disciple I don’t have anyone to disciple I’m too busy I’m too busy – What I’m really saying: other things are more important to me – But this is the only reason we’re still here!

Practical Steps 1.Recommit yourself as a disciple – Grow in obedience – Grow in knowledge and skill 2.Look for someone to help – Share your faith – Pass on what you’ve learned thus far
