Aim: What led to the genesis of the Cold War, and what impact did it have on the world? Title: Origins of the Cold 1.Please hand in your HW. 2.As per the graphic organizer – yesterday’s classwork & last night’s homework, I need a few volunteers to read aloud their thesis statement and analysis surrounding the three (3) boxes of example #1… in plain and simple English, what are human rights? How have said rights been VIOLATED over the years – focus had to be on [as always – specificity is the name of the game]: - Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?

Activity #1 1.What was the “COLD” war? - What were the origins of this (wink! wink!) “WAR”. - Differentiate: Compare and contrast this“WAR”with a “HOT” war.

Activity #2 Carefully examine the political cartoon. Describe what you see. Explain: 1.In your own words, does this cartoon illustrate the Cold War? If so, why? If no, why not? Explain.

Activity #3: Questions? Comments? Please take out your handout/packet - As per last night’s homework, students were asked to printout, review/actively read, and then bring to class today an analysis surrounding the advent, overall height, players, etc., of the Cold War.

If you have time… checkout John Green’s: The Cold War: Crash Course US History #37.

The Cold War [ ]: An Ideological Struggle Soviet & Eastern Bloc Nations [“Iron Curtain”] US & the Western Democracies GOAL  spread world-wide Communism GOAL  “Containment” of Communism & the eventual collapse of the Communist world. [George Kennan] METHODOLOGIES: 1.Espionage [KGB vs. CIA] 2.Arms Race [nuclear escalation] 3.Ideological Competition for the minds and hearts of Third World peoples [Communist govt. & command economy vs. democratic govt. & capitalist economy]  “proxy wars” 4.Bi-Polarization of Europe [NATO vs. Warsaw Pact]

As per the Cold “WAR” – creation of: 1.C.I.A 2.N.S.A 3.James Bond novellas & movies = espionage [spying] and saving the world from “commies,” while always getting the pretty girl. 4.Focus/greater emphasis was placed on math, science, & technology [praise Yaacov, Riaad, Erin, E.T, Richard, etc.]. 5.Space Race = wanted to be the first to place a man on the moon… Stemmed from competition with the Soviets…Always competing with one another. 6.With the exception of “PROXY WARS” in Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan [Russians – have you seen any of the “Rambo” flix? Check it out if you can], this so-called “WAR” had less to do with actual fighting, and more to do with everything else. 7.Nuclear proliferation = simply meant total armament, especially those of mass destruction, e.g., A-bomb, H-bomb, etc… more guns, bombs, and other killing devices than ever before.

The Cold War What is it? –It is a bitter state of indirect conflict that existed between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for more than four decades –Occurred from 1945 to early 1990s Why is it called a “ cold war ” ? –Hot war is when there is actual fighting –The cold war there was no direct fighting between the U.S. and the Soviet Union

Origins of the Cold War How did the Soviets cause the Cold War? –U.S. is upset that the Soviet Union Set up a non- aggression pact with Germany –Soviet Union wanted to spread communism (the U.S. disliked the communist idea) –The Soviets made satellite nations out of the countries on their western border Nations that were subject to Soviet domination and serve as a buffer zone

Origins of the Cold War How did the U.S. cause the Cold war? –After the Russian Revolution the U.S. would not recognize the communist government until 1933 –The U.S. waited to open up a second front in Europe during WWII –U.S. asked Britain for help on the A-bomb and left the Soviets out –U.S. wants to spread the ideas of liberty, equality, and democracy

Origins of the Cold War What are some other causes of the Cold War? –Argument over Poland The Soviets wanted it to be a communist country The U.S. wants to allow the people of Poland to decide for themselves

Declaration of War Two unofficial declarations of war –In February 1946 Stalin gives a speech where he predicted the ultimate triumph of communism over capitalism –In March 1946 Winston Churchill gave a speech where he said that there was an “Iron Curtain” that has descended on Europe

Fighting the Cold War How does the U.S. fight the Cold War? –Containment, what is it? The U.S. will resist any Soviet attempts to form Communist governments anywhere –Truman Doctrine, what is it? The U.S. must help nations that are resisting conquest by armed minorities and help free people to stay free –How do they work together? Containment set out the U.S. aim for the Cold War while the Truman Doctrine gave us justification for what U.S. did.

George Kennan [“X Article”]: CONTAINMENT Goals Means Actual Application 1.Restoration of the balance of power 2.Reduction of Soviet ability to project outside power. Encouragement of self- confidence in nations threatened by Soviet expansion. Exploitation of tensions in international communism. Long-term program of U.S. economic assistance [Marshall Plan] Cooperation with communist regimes; [supporting Titoism in Yugoslavia]

3.Modification of the Soviet concept of international relations. Negotiating settlement of outstanding differences. Using “carrots & sticks’; containing Germany with an embrace and Russia at arms length. George Kennan [“X Article”]: CONTAINMENT Goals Means Actual Application
