Organic Foods Dalila Martinez Government Period 1 Food Choices : Consumption & Regulation

Essential Question How much should government interfere (regulate) in our food choices?

Position Statement Organic foods are better for everyone. Therefore, the government should subsidize organic foods.

Arguments Organic foods are more beneficial than intensively farmed products. Organic foods take a lot more time and effort. Organic foods are free from insecticides, pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, fertilizers, and other toxic additives, colorings, flavorings, and other preservatives.

Argument #1 Organic foods are more beneficial than intensively farmed products. -“Some studies show that organic foods have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants…” -Since organic foods are free from toxic additives, they are fresher and taste better. -People with allergies to foods or chemicals find their symptoms “lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods.” (

Argument #2 Organic foods take a lot more time and effort. -Organic foods take a longer amount of time to actually grow and become “worthy of being sold”. -“…the total cost involved in the production process of organic foods are also higher due to greater labor inputs on small and less quantity or output units.” (

Argument #3 Organic foods are free from insecticides, pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, fertilizers, and other toxic additives, colorings, flavorings, and other preservatives. -In farmed products, a consumed washed apple contains over 30 pesticides, while an organic apple contains 0 pesticides. -Many farmed products that contain chemicals can link to birth defects, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. An organic product is free of this. -“…don’t forget about the cocktail of antibiotics and hormones that cattle and poultry are force fed.” (

Summarization All in all, the government should subsidize in organic foods. Organic foods are free from toxic additives and unnatural hormones, take longer and more effort to process, and are much more beneficial than other intensively farmed products

Counterargument + Rebuttal Many people believe that if the government subsidizes organic products, taxes will be raised. If the government does not subsidize organic foods, many people will be unhealthy, which leads to high medical expenses.

Call to Action Marches Rallies Community Events - Through marches, rallies, and community events, people can hold up signs or yell out about subsidizing organic foods. It’s a way that people can get other people to agree and take a big part into making a difference in the world.

Take Action Since this action was passed in the house, but not the senate we, the people need to take it to the Senators, who are Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. (California - Barbara Boxer & Dianne Feinstein)
