What is a nonprofit?

What is the Nonprofit Sector? j8BHt_4http:// j8BHt_4

What is a non-profit? The U.S. Tax Code distinguishes between 28 categories of tax-exempt organizations under Section 501(c) of the 1986 tax code. under Sections 501(c)(3), organizations that are dedicated specifically to “public charitable” purposes according to Section 501(c) of Title 26 of the U.S. Tax Code, they are exempt from federal income tax there are approximately 1.4 million nonprofit organizations (recognized by the Internal Revenue Service), Carman, Fredericks, & Introcaso (2008:7)

What is Charitable? According to the IRS, the term charitable refers to efforts relating to the “relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of education or science; erecting or maintaining public buildings, monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government; lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency” (Internal Revenue Service, 2007, p. 4). Carman, Fredericks, & Introcaso (2008:7)

What makes a non-profit distinct? According to Salamon (1999), nonprofit organizations in the United States have six distinguishing characteristics, in being: 1. Institutional in form (as opposed to being ad hoc, informal, or temporary), legally recognized, and incorporated 2. Private organizations, and separate from government 3. Not profit-distributing, meaning that all profits must be reinvested into the mission of the organization (as opposed to being distributed to the owners of the organization) 4. Self-governing, and not controlled by outside entities 5. Voluntary in nature, relying on volunteers in the staffing, activities, or governance of the organization 6. In existence to deliver a public service or benefit (pp. 10–11) Carman, Fredericks, & Introcaso (2008:6)

Use the following to practice with Delancy Street 15 minute video

Sample Programs for Class Final Project*indicates may be used as an example in the course Crime Related Scared Straight Community Policing Fight Crime Invest in Kids* Neighborhood Watch Domestic Violence Arrest policy* Delancy Street Moving Company (job training for ex cons)*- Today’s Example The city of Syracuse has recently launched a new violence intervention project called Syracuse Truce. Syracuse Truce is a partnership of community members, law enforcement and service providers that is designed to reduce gun violence. Syracuse Truce is based on a model that has proven to be effective in addressing gang problems in Boston, Indianapolis, Lowell and Cincinnati. The model is based on focused deterrence, focusing additional enforcement efforts on the small number of offenders (and their associated gang contacts) who are responsible for a disproportionate share of gun violence. Those individuals and groups willing to cooperate with the message of Syracuse Truce will also be assisted in making connections with service providers and other appropriate programs. Human Service Related Pedal to Possibilities Job Training Program* Mental Health Counseling (e.g., engagement calling*) 21 day challenge horses as disability therapy* Homeless Outreach Youth counseling sessions Fit 4 Life Youth Fitness and Anti-obesity program*

Lab Rationale and Content Lab #LabToolQuestion Answered 1Community NeedPivot Table used to summarize data and find patternsWhat is the Problem? 2Locial ApproachLogic Model as used to structure thinking about solving a problem and pivot table as used to test this logic- This lab (video 2c) also shows how pivot tables translate to Crosstabulations in SPSS What might solve the problem - and does it solve the problem? 3Assessment- Summative Applying Statistical Tests of Significance to pivot tables/crosstabs (chi-square test) and comparison of averages (t-test) and then using advanced regression analysis to control for outside variables that may influence the outcome such as age and gender Can we generalize from our findings here to be confident that this program will work well in other places or if we repeated it next year? 4SustainabilityFlexible budget spreadsheet to keep track of the costs of running a program What is the cost of the program per person served?
