THE NEW KS3 ENGLISH NATIONAL CURRICULUM Wandsworth English Group January 2014 Wandsworth English Group

Agenda Wandsworth English Group Preparing for implementation of the new KS3 PoS in September 2014 Assessment Resource implications Wandsworth English Group

Exploring assessment at KS3 No further guidance or information from DfE published Model assessment systems and sample assessment materials expected at the end of 2013 have not yet been published. DfE has announced a fund for Primary Assessment Innovation – January innovation-fund-application-form Responses to the consultation on Wikispace Wandsworth English Group

Update on Progress 8 measure and reforms to secondary school accountability framework - January 2014 We want to ensure that schools with good teaching in English Literature receive sufficient credit in the new accountability framework. We have therefore decided to adapt the position of English Literature in the Progress 8 measure. The original position was:  English Language would be double-weighted if a pupil also took English Literature.  English Literature can be counted in the ‘open group’ of subjects. Wandsworth English Group

The new position is:  The best of English Language and English Literature will be double-weighted, provided a pupil has taken both qualifications.  The second best score of English Literature and English Language can be counted in the ‘open group’ of subjects, if it is one of the pupil’s highest scores in this group. In 2016 exams, there is still a Combined English qualification (once GCSEs have been reformed, there will be an English Language and an English Literature GCSE qualification, but no Combined English). The Combined English qualification can be double-weighted in 2016 because pupils will have studied both English Language and English Literature to achieve this qualification. Wandsworth English Group

We will also give English Literature parity with English Language in other headline performance tables measures in 2016 tables. Therefore:  In the measure showing the percentage of pupils achieving a C grade or better in English and maths, a pupil would have to achieve a C in either English Literature of English Language to satisfy the English requirement (in 2016, a C in Combined English would be sufficient).  In the EBacc measure, a pupil must study both English Language and English Literature, and achieve a C grade or better in at least one of these qualifications, to satisfy the English requirement (in 2016, a C in Combined English would be sufficient). Wandsworth English Group

Discuss What are your early views about assessment at KS3? Have you trialled any assessment against the new PoS? What elements of the new GCSE English Language and Literature content and assessment objectives will need to be considered when planning KS3? English Language & Literature Key Stage 4 Changes to GCSE Examinations *There will no longer be a GCSE English from New GCSE English Language requires: wider range of “high quality, challenging” literature Reading and writing equal weighting Greater focus on Standard English in Spoken and Written form Speaking and Listening not part of the final mark/grade Examination papers with tiers to be removed. GCSE English Literature A wider range of “classic literature” to be the focus. The following will be assessed: A 19 th Century novel A Shakespeare play A selection of poetry since 1789 – including Romantic Poetry British fiction as dram from 1914 Increased assessment of Unseen Texts Tiered papers removed The quality of written response to be assessed.

Reading – Resource Implications Pupils should be taught to develop an appreciation and love of reading, and read increasingly challenging material independently through reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, including in particular whole books, short stories, poems and plays with a wide coverage of genres, historical periods, forms and authors. The range will include high-quality works from: English literature, both pre-1914 and contemporary, including prose, poetry and drama Shakespeare (two plays) seminal world literatureShakespeare (two plays) stage-3-english/ Wandsworth English Group

Problems/Challenges Possibilities/Benefits  No funding  Saving of Time  Little Time  Reduction of Stress  The “blind leading the blind”  Sharing of ideas/strategies  Competitiveness  Local conformity  One size does not fit all  Cross Moderation Opportunities  Lack of attendance/commitment for a variety of reasons “Bridge over Troubled Waters” Simon and Garfunkel Without Local Authority help should we formulate our own self-help network?

Possible Time Framework… Short Term Make your team aware of the fact they are going to have to coincide Decide on GCSE course for your school Representatives to meet at Wandsworth English Group Watch developments at Key Stage 1 & 2. Medium Term To invigorate teaching and use of formal written and spoken language Look at tests at KS2 Modify Schemes of Work to ensure coverage of new skills/requirements Discuss with team what they would want of our assessment scheme Possibly send some staff to visit primary/other secondary schools to investigate assessment. Long Term Develop and meeting schedule in consultation with SMT for internal moderation Students need to have more opportunities to interact with unseen texts using skills learned The use of formal language needs to be imbedded into the curriculum Send representation to WEG to share problems and practices. To develop extended writing opportunities
