Do Now: Describe Newton’s law of Action and Reaction. You may draw pictures to help you explain it. Turn in when you are finished.

Match Rockets Match rockets work using Newton’s law of Action and Reaction. Gases come out the back of the rocket, and the rocket is pushed forward. Which is the action force? Which is the reaction force?

Match Rockets Materials: 1 matchbook 1 match box 1 small paperclip 1 pin 1 large piece of aluminum foil

Match Rockets 1.Lay out the aluminum foil for a base. 2.Bend the paper clip to make a launch pad. 3.Take one match out of the matchbook. 4.Hold the match in one hand and the pin in the other.

Match Rockets 5.Put the pin so that the pointy end is on the red part of the match. 6.Wrap a small piece of aluminum foil VERY TIGHTLY around the pin and the head (top) of the match. 7.Carefully pull out the pin. Do not squeeze the tube shut!

Match Rocket 8.Set the match rocket on the paper clip launch pad. 9.Light one of the wooden matches from the match box. 10. Hold the lit match under the head (top) of the match rocket.

Match Rockets What variables can you change? – Angle of launch pad – Amount of aluminum foil – Amount of fuel – How the aluminum foil is wrapped – Size of exhaust tube Now make match rockets with your partner. Notice what works and what does not.
