The Silent Way Method The objective of The Silent Way Method of language teaching is for students to work as independent language learners. The teacher speaks very little when using this method.

The role of the teacher is to draw the learners' attention to the way that they are going about the act of learning. The teacher facilitates the students' discoveries and helps the students to gain insight into the functioning of the language. In order to use this method some specific materials are required.

A pointer should be used by the teacher to help guide the class as they vocalize the sounds. A pointer can also help to teach which syllable has the stress on it by tapping that syllable harder than the others. This aids in the development of proper pronunciation of words in the target language.

Based on these principles and using the techniques described below, it was hoped that students would eventually be able to actively use the language for self-expression, relating their thoughts, feelings and perceptions.

(1)  Sound-Color Chart - click here to see an example       (The teacher refers students to a color-coded wall chart depicting individual sounds in the target        language - students use this to point out and build words with correct pronunciation)

(2)  Teacher's Silence       (Teacher is generally silent, only giving help when it is absolutely necessary) (3)  Peer Correction       (Students encouraged to help each other in a cooperative and not competitive spirit)

(4) Rods       (Rods are used to trigger meaning, and to introduce or actively practice language.  They can        symbolize whatever words are being taught and be manipulated directly or abstractly to create        sentences)

(5)  Self-correction Gestures       (Teacher uses hands to indicate that something is incorrect or needs changing - eg. using fingers as        words then touching the finger/word that is in need of correction)

(6)  Word Chart       (Words are depicted on charts, the sounds in each word corresponding in color to the Sound-Color        Chart described above - students use this to build sentences)

(7)  Fidel Chart - click here to see an example       (A chart that is color-coded according to the sound-color chart but includes the various English        spellings so that they can be directly related to actual sounds) (8) Structured Feedback       (Students are invited to make observations about the day's lesson amd what they have learned)

Sentence 1 BBC channel launched an Arabic television news channel to broadcast for 12 hours a day, but this will move later to 24 hours a day. أطلقت شبكة بي بي سي العربية اليوم قناة تلفزيون اخبارية تعمل 12 ساعة يوميا، ترتفع في وقت لاحق الى 24 ساعة.

Sentence 2 The channel, will go on air and be freely available to anyone with a satellite or cable connection. وستكون القناة متاحة مجانا، ويمكن استقبال بثها عبر اطباق الاستقبال الفضائية او خدمات الكابل.

Sentence 3 The channel, will go on air at 9:56 with a promotional film to the audience, which lasts for four minutes. ويبدأ ارسال القناة اليوم في الساعة 9:56 بفيلم يعرف المشاهدين بها، ويستغرق نحو اربع دقائق.

Sentence 4 Launching the channel comes with major changes in BBC Arabia, including a new design for its Website on the internet: BBCARABIC.com As well as, developing Radio programmes. ويأتي اطلاق القناة في اطار تغييرات شاملة في بي بي سي العربية، تشمل اطلاق تصميم جديد لموقعها على الانترنت BBCARABIC.com وتطوير برامجها الاذاعية

Sentence 5 These changes would feature the channel a new phase in its history since launching Radio service in January 1938, as it broadcasts enhanced multimedia service: tv, radio, internet, and cell phones in March 2008. وبهذه التغييرات تدخل بي بي سي العربية مرحلة جديدة في تاريخها الذي بدأ في يناير/ كانون الثاني 1938 باطلاق خدمة اذاعية لتصبح في مارس/آذار 2008 شبكة معلومات تقدم خدماتها عبر وسائط متعددة: التلفزيون والاذاعة والانترنت والهواتف المحمولة.

BBC Arabia director, Hussam Alsukkari said. “One of the significant changes in media is the entry of advanced technologies to obtain information”. He Added "هذا التغيير لم نقرره نحن، بل فرضه المستمع والمشاهد والقارئ"، هذا ما يقوله حسام السكري مدير بي بي سي العربية، ويضيف ان "احد التغييرات الهامة التي شهدها مجال الاعلام هو دخول تقنيات جديدة للحصول على المعلومات“.

BBC realised this change and launched a tv channel in 1994 but stopped in 1996. وأوضح السكري "ان تغييرا آخر حدث في الاعلام العربي في السنوات الماضية، وهو ان القنوات الفضائية اصبحت الوسيلة المفضلة للحصول على المعلومات لما تتميز به من قدرة على الوصول الى المشاهدين دون الكثير من المشكلات الفنية والقانونية التي تواجه البث بالراديو. وادركت بي بي سي هذا التغير واطلقت قناة تلفزيونية عام 1994 الا انها لم تستمر وتوقفت عام 1996".

Sentence 8 a “After the cessation of this channel, we tried to relaunch a TV channel, but the prominent problem was inadequate funding. وأضاف السكري "بعد توقف هذه القناة حاولنا اطلاق قناة تلفزيونية من جديد، لكن كانت المشكلة دائما هي توفر التمويل الكافي لإطلاق مثل هذه القناة.

Sentence 8 b Finally, the fund was provided to launch the channel, after BBC has restructuring its world services and canceling some services in other languages to redirect them in other projects, including the launch of an Arab TV channel. وأخيرا توفر هذا التمويل بعد ان قامت بي بي سي بإعادة هيكلة خدماتها العالمية، وقامت بإلغاء بعض الخدمات بلغات أخرى لتوجه ما كان ينفق عليها إلى عدد من المشروعات من بينها إطلاق قناة تلفزيونية عربية.
