S PREAD OF M ETHODIST AND B APTIST CHURCHES John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church, arrived with Oglethorpe Second Great Awakening ( ) saw large numbers of Georgians identify themselves as Baptist and Methodist Mission work by these churches converted slaves on plantations Farmers and townspeople held revivals and camp meetings to increase members After a harvest, revivals allowed people to hear sermons and socialize Circuit riders were ministers who rode from town to town preaching and converting people to Baptist and Methodist faiths The nickname “the Bible Belt” came from this time
