Nobles Library Orientation

A few rules for the library before we begin…  No Food or Drink in the library  No surfing the web – the computers are only to be used for school work. Any students found playing games, watching videos or using proxies will be reported to administration.  No book bags allowed in the library  No cell phones  Only students on spare may use mp3 players  Students coming from a class MUST have a note from their teacher.

Welcome to the Library!  The library has all sorts of resources, right at your fingertips…  Fiction  Non-Fiction  Newspapers  Magazines  Electronic Sources

Fiction Books  Fiction books are based on untrue events.  Our fiction collection can be found on the red shelving.  The fiction books are shelved in alphabetical order according to the author’s last name  Fiction books are perfect for those of you who like to read for pleasure.

Non-Fiction Books  Non-Fiction books are based in reality. They are true accounts, facts and information.  The non-fiction section of the library is found on the tall wooden shelves in the back corner of the library.  Books in this section are shelved according to their dewey decimal number.  The dewey decimal numbers for each shelf can be found at the end of the row.  These books are great to use for research or to learn more about a topic

Newspapers  Our library subscribes to The Windsor Star and Lakeshore News  Current articles can be found next to the check-out desk  Back issues can be requested for use in projects or DEAR

Magazines  Our library subscribes to over 15 magazines!  Current issues can be found in the magazine rack near the couches  Back issues can be found on and in the black shelving next to the fiction section.

With so many books, where do I begin?  The easiest way to narrow down your search is to use the library catalogue. In the ‘olden’ days, it use to be a big filling cabinet filled with cards, but now it is all available online!  To access our online catalogue, go to the WebCat link within the student reference portal.  Here, I’ll show you…

Wow, all of these great print resources, how do I check them out?  It’s easy! All you need is your student number and the book you want to take out!  Most books are signed out for a 3 week period – but don’t worry about doing the math, I’ll stamp a due date in the back  But watch out, if your books are late being returned, late fees can start to add up! If you don’t pay for late fees or missing books, you won’t be able to get your textbooks for the next semester or year!  To return your books, simply place them in the wooden book return.

Electronic Sources  Our library allows all students access to the internet when they are using it for class purposes.  When searching for information online, it is important to use ‘vetted’ sites.  What is ‘vetted’ you ask?  A vetted site is one that has been evaluated for its accuracy of content (meaning it is true information – not made up!)  So how do you know whether a site is vetted? There are many ways to do a check yourself, but the easiest way is to use one of our subscription databases to search for information since ALL of it is vetted!

Subscription Databases  To access subscription databases at school, you need to go to the STUDENT REFERENCE PORTAL From here, you can click on the SUBSCRIPTION DATABASES Link and find the resource you are looking for. Here…these handy pamphlets might help! Notice that some of the databases require logins at home and/or school. Keeping this with you makes life much easier!

Hold on, we’re almost done! AAAA few more services that the library can help you with are: PPPPhotocopier – 10 cents a copy AAAArt supplies if you forgot your glue! UUUUsed Bristol Boards for sale - $2 each PPPProjectors and Laptop on loan if you need to present a project (Your teacher must book them)

That’s All for Now! Any questions?

Alrighty then… Time for the Scavenger Hunt!

Instructions for Scavenger Hunt WWWWith a partner, you must complete the following Scavenger Hunt – answering questions in the order they appear! TTTThe first team done, wins a prize! RRRRemember – NNNNo Cheating NNNNo Sabotage PPPPut things back EXACTLY where you found them AND HAVE FUN!!!
